Now what?

At the beginning, as with all beginnings, it was exciting and scary and full of possibility. I worked hard to put aside my fears, make new connections and try out new experiences. I took the approach recommended by Herminia Ibarra in her book Working Identity, by 'crafting experiments' ie trying things out. I studied psychology and creativity, sang, wrote, meditated, made new friends and worked for one of the most creative and innovative theatre companies (albeit in arts administration). I learned something from each of these. And I'm still not much clearer about what to do next; it remains misty. I can't answer the question "what would you LIKE to do?". This makes it very difficult for anyone to help me. For a period, I was happy with not knowing; it seemed part of the process. Now it's just irritating me. I've allowed myself the summer to let go of seeking for a while and hoping this won't just drift into laziness and a loss of confidence. I've wheeedled myself back into my comfort zone. Perhaps I needed to have a break. But I'm very conscious of the need to stretch myself again.

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? One can only state the very obvious – your ‘problem’ can surely only be meaningfully addressed by informed discussion(s) with friends or colleagues who know you and have your confidence. Naturally, the onus for any decision rests with you – as widely said, ‘no person is an island’ … nor should any healthy person wish it otherwise.

People knowing nothing about you cannot even make sensible suggestions based on the sparse information you provide. Your claim to have “studied psychology and creativity” (all in a twelve month period!!) is, by definition, just pure gobble-de-gook, even had not your postings consistently exposed the sham-ness of the claim. That you have ‘meditated’ impresses only pseudos, themselves life’s failures; that you ‘worked for the creative and active company’ in ‘admin’ is like an academic credential earned at Oxford & Cambridge as a toilet cleaner; the reader is left stunned that after all this pretentious goo you fear a “drift into lack of confidence”!

You claim to have “made new friends” as you have groped around in the quicksand … surely then these are the people with whom you should be presenting yourself – IF YOU’VE BEEN WRITING, HAVE YOU SHARED THE TEXTS WITH THEM … to enable them to see something of the ‘real you’ behind all this screen of verbiage you offer to your readers. If you CAN’T share your writings, your truly favourite book preferences, the music ‘that turns you on’ etc., etc. with friends they can’t be much of friends. If you insist on ‘getting advice’ from people ONLY based on the superficial junk you’ve outlined above, maybe you should contact ‘Mystic Meg’, or the local Tarot reader – others cannot help you.

If there is any authenticity at all in your search – then talk it out with a friendly group chosen from your ‘new and old friends’; there are a couple of individuals who post in these columns you might consider inviting. Why not make an effort to meet Claire B? I’ve never met the lass personally (and she may well be furious I have the impertinence to make the suggestion!), but she is the sort of person who could give you just the sort of realistic, down to earth sort of suggestions, you OUGHT to be seeking ?!?!

I'm not sure that meditation is purely the province of "psuedos". Neuroscience has provided some pretty solid evidence of positive physiological benefits and the people who practice seem to have more balance and peace in their lives. Hard to argue with in our troubled times.
As for equating the non creatives who work in the arts with toilet cleaners, putting aside the fact that toilet cleaning, itself, is an essential and useful function; how do you think artists come to perform their work without the support mechanisms in place?
Of course I talk to my friends and colleagues and explore ideas for what next. But what's the point of a newspaper site blog if I can't reach out a little further? Sometimes the spark of an idea comes from somewhere outside your regular circuit and is all the better for it.

Hello again, Karen. I seems we are approaching the ‘end of the road’!? Your thread began about ten months ago, on a quick count, you have posted 17 times to which Anubis has responded on 14 occasions. Although we clearly come from different directions, you don’t ‘write me off’ (in the manner of Theinsider!), instead inviting me to participate on your other site.

On the specific points you make on my latest comment, the alleged ‘evidence’ you claim from neuroscience would equally apply to belief in ‘guardian angels’, ‘spiritualism’ or going on cross-country runs. Each working in its own way …

You miss the point on the toilet cleaners. Of course they are valuable and essential members of our society, that NOT what was being discussed. But because their workbase is a top university IS NOT ‘evidence’ of developing their ‘creativity’.

Of course the blog is a suitable place to attempt to ‘reach out’, BUT as I’ve said, after ten months and seventeen posts, the ONLY responses you’ve had that have addressed your task, the ONLY serious attempts to tackle what you are saying/asking have come from my fourteen replies. It must surely be obvious, by now, that you are NOT going to be getting any of the positive suggestions that you would find acceptable. (My odd attempts have clearly been miserable failures! Sorry!)

Your opening comment, ten months ago, just gave your name and four lines of text – the BrightonBear looked forward to what you might be going to say, one other person ignored your theme. This was followed by another post, where readers received your ‘life history’ in four VERY brief paragraphs. Only Anubis attempted a preliminary comment …

A week later, Burgess901 expressed admiration for your courage and looked forward to what would follow, as did BBear --- but the posts that followed from you added absolutely nothing concrete. Tragically, therefore, Burgess 901 disappeared into the woodwork.

Essentially, from then on, only Anubis responded, addressing what you had said. There were occasional comments, NOT related to your theme, that promised some interest (Lulu Devine, Kateh, Annok), but their offerings DID NOT relate to your central theme – rather quibbled about appropriate quotations, etc., etc.

Finally, Theinsider, who tells me I’m obviously a ‘know all’ -- which mystified me as, if there is a central theme to my several remarks, is a constant complaint that it seems quite impractical to advise you given the lack of information you provide, hence it is impossible to know enough about you to give meaningful advice. Perhaps Theinsider might usefully try a course on ‘English comprehension’?! (As all on this site are agreed, Claire is certainly well able to make any points she might feel necessary – in response to the compliment offered by Anubis.)

(Sorry about name change -- electronic problem)

@Anubis - your comments and suggestions have largely been critical, and have challenged my desire to stay on the right side of kindness. That said, this will be my last post until I have something new to say and offer.
All the best,
Karen
