Having worked in The City of London for many years, I am aware that we are due to play Saarfend United this coming Saturday. Saarfend like Brighton & Hove has a posh part, it’s called Thorpe Bay though compared to Hove; Thorpe Bay is a bit like Moss Side, apparently.

We won, I said we would. I told the bloke next door when I saw him.

Peter Taylor makes the familiar trip to Withdean this weekend, 7 years or so since he told Dick Knight, whatever he was apportioning to the playing budget, wasn’t enough. It was a strange period in Albion history, as everyone expected Taylor to rock up at another club soon after he left the Albion, although he didn’t for quite some time. Albion folklore suggests that Dick’s preferred replacement was former Cameroon manager Winifred Schafer, it is rumoured the pair met at Gatwick and agreed terms, only for Schafer to change his mind (with a little help!) and fly home the next day. Uncle Dick was then left with an arranged Press Conference at The Grand but no ‘star’ manager to unveil, until Mr Hinshelwood stepped in to the breach. Of course like Steve McLaren he was first choice all along, really!

You know it’s desperate times when you’re considering writing to the Football Association to plead with them to hand Southampton even more points deductions, merely to save the Albion from being pulled right to the foot of the table, despite currently only being one place above!

In my young (ahem) lifetime the Albion have had some good results in SE 16.

Did I say I don’t recall many memorable games against Stockport? Well I will from now on.

Oops! Was Tuesday night really Albion’s worst competitive result since late 1973? Yes, yes it was, not since a young Nigel Clough and Brain Moore cosied up on the Albion bench at The Goldstone, had we been beaten by so many, admittedly with so few on the pitch.

Since the escape from relegation last season (not the Great Escape of course) I have been eager to see when the trip to Griffin Park would be. It’s fairly easy to get there, I have some old workmates who are Bee’s season ticket holders, and if the football’s not up too much, you can watch the planes come into land, at nearby Heathrow! However in late June, it became apparent that this season’s trip was to be just 8 days after the birth of our second child, as it transpired we had a girl, so of course she was late! Fifteen minutes after listening in to the Swansea game on Tuesday, my wife calmly announced we should call the maternity unit, and fifteen (yes just fifteen) minutes before delivery (just 3 hours later) the Midwives strode along the path!!!

Having only just survived by the skin of our teeth at the end of last season, I have to confess that I was more than tempted to end my reign of seven years as a season ticket holder at the Albion before the beginning of this season.

Oh Joy, oh rapture, oh where did I put my season ticket after it eventually turned up?

Despite missing arguably the best part of the Albion’s history, such as the 1983 FA Cup final, or the drama involving Bill Archer back in the club’s darkest stages, being a teenage Albion fan has its advantages; none more so than having to go on work experience as part of the school curriculum during Year ten.

The hype is nearly over, the waiting nearly at an end. Albion fans all around the country are currently giddy with excitement at the prospect of a good season ahead, and with currently up to eight new faces to see at Withdean on Saturday there will be a lot of matching faces to shirt numbers for the first 90 minutes at least -and it’s only Walsall we are playing, so we are bound to stuff them out of sight . . . or are we?

I have sourced my memory bank, and hope to regale you all, with memories of my favourite and most significant Albion games. This my first effort, in what will hopefully become a regular feature.

Supporting the Albion from Manchester is tough, at times ridiculously so. With the world’s best supported, and the world’s richest club within a short distance, what is it that drives the North West Seagulls thousands of miles a year to watch the Stripes? Is it madness, nostalgia, rose tinted glasses or stupidity?
