Brighton: offering a more literal, less enjoyable dirty weekender

Posted on 3:59pm Monday 21st May 2012

No wonder Brighton and Hove City Council failed to find anyone to advertise on its bins. Aside from the obvious branding problems of being the company everyone associates with dog-doings, masticated chewing gum and free newspapers (*shudder*), I doubt they’d get any exposure. Nobody is using the damned things!

Why ‘Made in China’ could eventually be good for consumers and bad for corporates seeking cheap labour

Posted on 9:26am Saturday 19th May 2012

Some people consider Made in China to be a bad thing. But, really, it's not all bad! Jo Chipchase looks at how the tables could turn on big corporates, with consumers going directly to Chinese merchants to buy cheap items that are identical to the more expensive ones sold in UK stores.

Pleasures of the Zimmer Zone part two

Posted on 1:14pm Tuesday 15th May 2012

We needn’t have gone to Rye and Lamb House in the east, or Plumpton in the north, or for that matter, Chichester and Goodwood in the west. First the West Pier Saga and now “Billy Bunter’s Postal Order” – is Brighton and Hove a place for prevarication and to be stuck in your car?

Posted on 3:00pm Wednesday 28th March 2012

With the nine-years-in-the-pipeline proposed redevelopment of Black Rock in the news, Jo Chipchase can't help recollecting the West Pier scenario and how it literally fell apart. She poses the question: shouldn't Brighton resolve its traffic congestion and parking issues before attracting even more people to get stuck in their cars?

Ad agencies bear-bait my son

Posted on 2:47pm Wednesday 28th March 2012

My son, like most four year olds, has a big imagination. In his head he plans to visit many countries, can speak many different languages and has over 100 brothers and sisters. But he is also rooted in an unshakeable reality that whatever he sees has to exist or be happening somewhere and be accessible to him. Which makes watching adverts a bit of a problem…

I don't believe in ghosts... but I used to live with one

Posted on 5:57pm Monday 6th February 2012

Last Halloween my husband and I went on a tour of the ‘Haunted’ Preston Manor, billed as a Ghost Tour we thought we’d certainly get to see or sense something spooky. But despite being conducted in the dark on the night of the year the veil between the living and the dead is supposedly at its thinnest the only scary thing that happened was the fact the pubs were already shut by the time it was over.

THE BRIGHTON BUG...

Posted on 4:25pm Monday 30th January 2012

When I left the call-centre with my prize-winning bottle of white wine, little did I know that I'd never be back...and apropos my previous post and Christopher Hitchens, a thanks to 'anubis'.
