The Wrestler (15)

The Wrestler arrives on a wave of expectation from Mickey Rourkes performance. He's already had a couple of comebacks but this one seems to be for real.

The Wrestler is the new film from Darren Aronofsky (requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) and the influence from his studio experience really shows. The Fountain was by all account a total nightmare for Aronofsky - The main star dropped out twice, each time resulting in a dropping of funding, The Wrestler is a step in the opposite direction - personally funded, no CGI, hand held, shot digitally - Its a real return to his debut 'Pi'. But is it any good? In a word....yes. Its a great drama about a man who cant come to terms with his own failure. Rourke plays Randy 'The Ram' Robinson, a washed up wrestler who can give up the dream. He still plays low key matches and attends fan signings but clamours for the big time. His only aquaintance is Cassidy, a stripper at a local bar. She is also feeling too old for her proffession but knows the difference between stage life and real life.

As Rourkes tragic path leads him to a reconcilliation with his estranged daughter and also a rematch from his heyday. You cant help but be amazed by his amazing portrayal of Randy. An oscar worthy performance. The film is a little underwhelming in its immediacy but will haunt your thoughts for weeks.....
