So it’s been nearly a month since I arrived in India, and I think I am beginning to settle into life here. I’d like to say I’m picking up the lingo… and it’s not like the children here aren’t eager
to teach me, it’s just I’m very bad at languages anyway. My failure to remember what they teach me is met with grave faces of disappointment. I find their names hard enough to remember anyway.

So the orientation week came to a close and the seven of us volunteers went off in our different directions into India. The week in Pondi finished with visits to various Indian NGOs, including the
Anul Ashram, an HIV/Aids orphanage looked after by Father Dominic – by far the most interesting person I have ever met. He told us the history of the Ashram, and his past volunteering experience
(as well as the odd anecdote involving Mother Teresa!).

Over the next 5 months I will be ‘touring’ India. I write this from a heavily air conditioned internet café on Mahatma Gandhi high street in Pondicherry (Pondi) in South East India. I flew into
Chennai (250kms north of Pondi) from London, where I spent 1 day before heading south to Pondicherry.
