Looking to the future

Congratulations to Spain as they take the World Cup home. Going into the tournament as favourites they certainly showed strength of character, overcoming an opening defeat and securing a tough victory against arch rivals Portugal along the way. It is very fair to say worthy winners of the cup showing immense team spirit.

As we enter the final week of South Africa 2010 I am interested in gauging reactions to Sepp Blatter's dream of hosting a World Cup on African soil. There has been endless pre tournament debate about security, infrastructure, technical ability, accommodation, ticketing and how the local people will benefit from overseas interest.

At least we're not French

We arrived in neglected Bloemfontain in the early hours of the morning on game day. We had just been on a bus and sat next to a couple of guys who had seen three lions at a game park the day before. It was an omen. The lions were ‘lying in the road, dead to the world’. Sounds about right.

This World Cup is bizarre

This World Cup couldn’t get more bizarre. The locals are not sure who to put their trust in; the only stand out performer being Argentina and even they realise Maradona’s team could easily plummet to mediocrity.

It's a 20-hour bus ride to Cape Town!

Harry Herbert, from Brighton, is in South Africa for the whole tournament and was in the stadium for the opening match of the tournament between South Africa and Mexico. After the slight disappointment of England’s first game at The Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg; I’m about to embark on a 20-hour, overnight bus ride to Cape Town in preparation for the mighty Algeria on Friday.
