What's the point of the rat race?

There must be more to life than a job you hate.

In the morning do you wake up dreading the thought of going to work in the next hour?

On Monday I went to London and I saw many people rushing about. It made me think ... If I asked a hundred people if they liked their job, how many people would say they do?

Why do so many people have jobs that they don’t seem to like?

I know money is an important thing in life but personally I would rather have a job that I am passionate about and love even if I earn less money.

Of course we all have to do things we don’t like (that’s life), but it shouldn’t be every working day!

Normally you spend more time at work than home so why have a job you don’t enjoy?

If everyone decided to do a job they enjoy maybe we would be a happier society, although maybe there would be jobs that need to be done with no one doing them.

I guess with many people losing their jobs in the current economic climate some people are just grateful to have a job at all.

When I’m older I’m not to sure what job I want to do but I know I want to go to college in three years when I’m 16 and then university to do a degree in marketing and art/design.

I will be happy to do a job I don’t really enjoy for a few years in order to progress my career.

However, ultimately I want a job I’m passionate about and can inspire others with.

What do you think? Let me know below

I quite agree,we should all have jobs that we like and feel passionate about, but as you say someone has to do the boring and dirty jobs and, as you say, they usually do them for the money. I don't know what the answer is for the majority, but for individuals like you Anne-Marie, the freedom to do what you like without money being your overriding concern is directly realted to your obligations. So for an easy life, reduce the need for money. Do not have kids accidentally when you are very young. Do not become addicted to expensive things like drugs, tobacco, alcohol, dsigner labels, flash cars, and all the other pointless toys of modern life. Stay fit and healthy being in poor health is very expensive, especially later in life. Try not to be persuaded by the media that our consumer society provides any sort of happiness - it provides a small amount of comfort, but a lot more greed, envy and selfishness. Whatever you do DO NOT STUDY MARKETING it is mainly persuading people that they want things they don't need. By all means study art and design, but do not expect to make a living from it (unless you are really good, work very hard and are extremely lucky). Do not wish for fame and celebrity, it is not worth it - ask any celbrity with half a brain - if you can find one. In short, be an individual, do not be persuaded to do things because everyone else does, have fun with your friends and be brave enough to think for yourself. Good luck.

What a deep and thought-provoking article.

Next week in the Argus - "War, Eh? - Why Can't We Just All Get Along?"

"I will be happy to do a job I don’t really enjoy for a few years in order to progress my career" - This is the trap!!! I did this too and it is not long before you become pigeon-holed. Luckily (and luck certainly had a lot to with it) I saved my money, started my own business and now I do enjoy my work. When you're young its hard to know what real jobs you want to do and not enough emphasis is given to choosing the right thing. I don't agree with the comments about marketing or art/design. Often art/design jobs can be combined with marketing or many other commercial situations and they can be rewarding in more ways than one.
