Children’s Parade, Brighton, May 2 Children’s Parade, Brighton, May 2

A vibrant array of colours and costumes will parade through the streets for Brighton Festival’s energetic curtain raiser.

The Children’s Parade, organised by community arts group Same Sky, will bring its unmistakable sense of fun to the centre of Brighton for the 19th successive year.

More than 4,000 participants of all ages from 70 local schools and community groups will show the expected 10,000 onlookers all that nature has to offer, with a theme of the four classical elements – earth, air, fire and water.

The theme has been chosen to tie in with one of guest artistic director Anish Kapoor’s major artistic preoccupations.

If visitors aren’t dazzled by the stunning visual creations, then the samba beat reverberating around the streets will have them dancing.

The procession begins on Sydney Street and concludes, via New Road and East Street, with a beachfront finale at Madeira Drive.

  • Starts 10.30am, free.
