As far as swashbuckling adventures go, this one was mind-bogglingly different.

For one thing, this fringe production was the first show of its kind to be performed at the Sea Life Centre.

The evening commenced with a free look around the centre. Then, eventually, not knowing what to expect, we were summoned to benches next to the shark and turtle tank where the extraordinary tale took place.

It was a busy and fast-paced story about Captain Nemo’s experiences on the high seas, based around the character from Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. It featured pirates, battles and cannibals, who attempt to cook Nemo - hence the title.

All of the ten actors, writers and director were young people between the ages of 13 and 19 from Final Curtain Theatre. As the fun and frolics got in to full swing, the cast were clearly enjoying themselves. The plot was a little confusing at times but it didn’t matter as it was a mad pantomime-style show.

Matteo Zambon made a cool young adventurer and Patrick McHugh, who like others played numerous parts, was menacing as the gruff mermaid bride Esmeralda.

These young performers really kicked up a storm in a shark tank.
