Kimya Dawson was a likeable performer with songs that were easy on the ear – whether she was singing one of her better-known numbers from the Juno soundtrack, a track from her kids’ album
Alphabutt, or an impromptu piece from her community choir.

There is a scene in one of my favourite books, William McIllvanney’s The Kiln, where the narrator’s uncle describes going to see Frank Sinatra at a theatre in Kilmarnock in the 1960s.

With the band seated on a low stage, playing acoustic instruments to an audience that couldn't see them, the Levellers's hometown return looked like an open invitation to that all too common
species: the Brighton gig-talker.

That Lea de Laria is multi-talented is undeniable. I saw her some years ago at the Drill Hall in London performing her stand-up comedy set and she has something of Joan Rivers about her.

Zaum are a magic band. Literally. They do that magic thing called free improvisation in which nothing is prepared or composed; they make the music up as they go along. I’m the first to admit that
some free improv is like a bunch of baboons on speed let loose in an instrument shop but these guys sound like the most movingly original thing you’ve seen in a month of Sundays.
