Brighton theatre group Spymonkey are the latest to be awarded an Argus Angel.
Their production, Oedipussy, takes Ancient Greek writer Sophocles’ tragedy and turns it in to a riotous comedy.
Argus reviewer Dom Smith, who nominated the show for an Angel, said: “The classic is filled with the most heinous crimes known to man – incest, paedophilia, murder – and they have made it a show with the most unforgettable gags known to man.”
Their festival run, which ended last night (May 16) at the Theatre Royal, marked the end of the show’s tour.
However, Toby Park, Spymonkey’s managing artistic director, said that another UK tour was planned for next spring.
He said: “We are absolutely chuffed. We are a Brighton-based group so to receive local recognition for our work is really great.
“The Angels have been a great introduction to the festival and have really helped to put the city on the map.”
