4:53pm Friday 11th April 2008 in Stage By Nione Meakin
Glow
A moving figure within a living painting, Glow is a site-specific performance for Fabrica - the deconsecrated Holy Trinity Church - and is described as a digital portal into another world.
The latest genre-defying dance installation from Australian company Chunky Move, the audience watches the floor from above as the motion of a human body triggers and controls music, lighting and animation.
From a digital swamp, the dancer's body emerges and unfolds a kaleidoscope of transforming shapes, which slip in and out of human form into unfamiliar and often grotesque states. The body's gestures are extended by and also manipulate the video world that surrounds them.
A collaboration between Chunky Move's artistic director Gideon Obarzanek and German interactive software engineer Frieder Weiss, technology, humanity and imagination collide in 20 minutes of unique digital dance.
Founded more than ten years ago, Chunky Move seek to redefine the definition of contemporary dance. The company has created a number of works for the stage, new media and installation work.
