As a nation we're getting fatter and recent research shows this is happening at an alarming rate.
That's the bad news. The question is this - what can be done to reverse this trend?
Professor Erik Millstone presented the findings of a recent study involving European countries and the different options available to us if we want to beat obesity.
These varied from advertising regulations and "fat taxes" to more long-term, radical initiatives such as town planning and transport policy, but gave no overall answer.
The talk's venue, on the outskirts of the University of Sussex campus, made it feel like a strictly academic affair for health professionals.
But then again, despite Jamie Oliver's best efforts, weight loss is never going to be a sexy issue.
