THE TECHNOLOGY hub in Brighton faces being hit by new VAT rules set to be enforced in January 2015, tax advisers have warned.

The ‘place of supply’ of telecommunications, broadcasting services and e-services, such as video on demand, e-books and app downloads, will change where the customer is a private individual.

Russell New, based in Steyning, said through careful planning businesses can ensure they are compliant and can benefit from the EU Commission’s voluntary ‘Mini One Stop Shop’ (MOSS).

Partner Vince McLoughlin said: “This is another piece of legislation aimed primarily at large businesses such as Amazon but having a greater impact on smaller businesses which do not have the logistical and administrative back up that the multi-national firms do.

“Those in the line of fire will need to register for VAT in each relevant EU member state where their customers are based and file VAT returns as appropriate in each state based on the rules in that country.

“In addition, businesses will need to consider the impact on pricing, website information and customer relations.”
