The deadline for the Brighton Grand Challenge is less than a week away.

The ambitious competition is looking for bright minds to come up with solutions to some of humanity’s biggest problems.

Organisers are seeking talented innovators who can come up viable business concepts which will lead to a better, safer world.

Two finalists will have the opportunity to attend Singularity University’s Executive Programme at NASA Research Park in California during 2014.

Winners will combine their skills with the latest knowledge about exponential technologies and network with Silicon Valley’s leaders.

It is hoped the competition, sponsored by American Express, will harness the city’s growing status as a tech hub and bolster its “Silicon Beach” credentials.

Judges include director of the Sussex Innovation Centre Mike Herd, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council Jason Kitcat (pictured left), University of Sussex Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research Professor Michael Davies and University of Brighton Professor of Entrepreneurship Marc Cowling.

Professor Paul Nightingale said: “The important thing is this is industry led, it is bottom up with companies working together with the support of big institutions like the universities to address the core problems constraining growth, that’s what creates a dynamic cluster.

“A lot of what is good for the creative industries is also what is good for wider sectors such as improving broadband.”

Phil Jones, managing director of Wired Sussex (pictured below), said: “Wired Sussex is really pleased to be a partner on.

“We believe this project will continue to enhance the international reputation of our digital sector, will focus innovative thinking on some of the city’s challenges and will create a fantastic event for this year’s digital festival.”

The competition is open to any individual, or groups of up to four people.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over on September 26.

The University of Brighton, Brighton and Hove City Council, Wired Sussex and Sussex Innovation Centre are also supporting the competition.

Entries close on Monday.
