For the first time, a comprehensive index is being compiled of the fastest growing companies in Sussex. In the run-up to the Sussex Super Growth awards in March, business editor FINN SCOTT DELANY profiles two more businesses that have made the shortlist.

ONE of countless companies which has benefited from its proximity to Gatwick is aircraft spares company Saywell International.

The family business was founded 60 years ago at the airport by Ron Saywell and is now headed up by his son, Peter.

Based at a 175,000 square foot state-of-the-art premises in Downlands Business Park, Worthing, the company is one of Europe’s largest aircrafts spares companies, supplying components for everything from transatlantic airliners to light aircraft.

It has offices in Florida, Canada and Singapore, employing more than 80 people, with 57 in Worthing. Last year the company bought an inventory package from Envoy Air in America and now holds one of the largest inventories for the ATR42 aircraft. Peter Saywell believes in giving back to the business community and his company devotes time to charities as well as Arun and Chichester Youth Football League and Worthing United Football Club.

The impressive new headquarters, which took five years to find, houses a cinema, indoor football pitch, gymnasium, lounge and games area.

In the five years after the move the company has seen a 28% increase in annual turnover.

An altogether difference growth story, pet food producer Arden Grange has built up its success with hard-fought brand-building.

Graham and Wendy Stephens founded the company in Albourne, near Hassocks, and were previously renowned in the dog world for breeding and showing their acclaimed Ardenburg German shepherds for a number of years. They put their extensive knowledge and understanding of canine diets into Arden Grange in 1996, which was the first to use human-grade fresh chicken in its products.

The ethical company does not test on animals and Wendy has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the Pet Industry Federation, in celebration of her tireless work to promote greater understanding of pet nutrition.

Arden Grange has also won business overseas with its products now available in more than 30 countries throughout the world, and more than 40 staff making up the ‘Arden Grange family’.
