A bank promising to put customers ahead of financial targets has opened in Brighton.

Metro Bank is the first new bank in the UK to be granted a licence in some 150 years.

At the launch of its 33rd branch in North Street, directors promised a simple, transparent approach, with customer service the main measure of staff performance.

Two days of celebrations are being staged at the store today and tomorrow, with stilt walkers, face painting, manicures and dancing dogs.

Toilets are free to use for non-customers, while dogs and bicycles are welcome.

Regional director Kevin Walker said: “Our role is to make banking simple and convenient to all our customers and we're delighted to bring the people of Brighton a bank that is dedicated to providing amazing service and convenience.

“We look forward to welcoming both personal and business customers to the banking revolution.”

Council leader Jason Kitcat attended an opening ceremony this morning and cut a ribbon of replica bank notes.

He said: “The bank's focus on customer service over financial targets is refreshing.

“Real choice for UK banking customers is fairly limited and this commitment to openness will hopefully be really positive - it's certainly not going to do any harm that's for sure.

“If other banks raise their game it's a winner.”

The branch opens from 8am - 8pm Monday - Friday, 8am - 6pm Saturday and 11am - 5pm Sundays and bank holidays.
