A COMMUNITY of makers and creative groups specialising in waste prevention, sustainability and upcycling have opened a hub in the old municipal market building at Circus Street, Brighton.

To celebrate their new home, they held a free event offering inspiration, ideas and advice on creative reuse and upcycling, to ‘make the most of your stuff’, inviting the public to bring along something interesting from their homes to swap, improve or recycle.

The space will be open daily, inviting people to visit and be inspired by ideas from social enterprises including Remade in Brighton, which sells recycled and upcyled clothes and furniture, reclaiming unwanted textiles, furniture and general ‘left behind items’, along with providing a community haberdashery service.

The groups include Diversis Artibus, four artists who are passionate about the Brighton arts scene.

They will be sharing a space to showcase local talent, turning old and disused items into something new and exciting.

Freegle offers swaps on household goods and unwanted building materials, as well as offering furniture for loan to community groups, such as waste bins, chairs and tables.

Other community projects in the space include Didi DIY, offering unique DIY classes taught by skilled, qualified and experienced professionals.

Bike Train CIC upcycles metal and materials to make cargo bikes and trailers to carry goods, as well as old bike frames and recycled wood.

Penny Humphrey, marketing manager of Cathedral (Brighton), which owns the building, said: “We are delighted to be supporting these creative and sustainable businesses and hope to continue to work with them as we develop Circus Street and Preston Barracks.”
