UP to 32,000 customers a year are expected to brave a new high-flying tourism attraction on Brighton seafront.

The Brighton Zip estimates up to 6,500 customers a month could use the 300 metre long zipwire at its busiest.

Backers hope the new attraction could open by the end of August if it receives planning permission, with an on-site café expected to open later in spring next year.

Plans for the zipwire were unveiled in March by Paramount Entertainments to replace the Brighton Wheel which was packed up last month and rehomed on the Dutch coast.

The attraction would see a 22.5 metre tower designed to emulate a helter skelter fairground ride installed on the retained base of the Wheel, with a steel boat landing point further along the beach by a crossing point for the Volk’s Railway.

The site will also have a two-tiered 140-cover café, souvenir shop, changing facilities and an equipment store along with a dedicated exhibition area for temporary exhibitions or tourist information.

Original period cast-iron railings removed to make way for the Brighton Wheel will be reinstated to the rear and sides of the deck.

During peak months it is expected that up to 74 members of staff would work on the venue, dropping to around 13 in quieter months.

Brighton and Hove City Council has already given landlord’s consent for the new attraction while a planning application was submitted last week.

The venue would open between 10am and 11pm for around 310 days a year only closing during poor weather.

Ian Coomber, head of planning for Stiles Harold Williams and planning consultant for The Brighton Zip, said: “We are thrilled to be involved in a further exciting project for this stretch of the seafront.

"The area to the east of Brighton Pier is in need of regeneration and Brighton Zip has the potential to provide jobs, joy and a jazzed up promenade.

"Alongside those eager to visit the i360, Brighton Zip will generate significant revenue and broaden the appeal of the tourism offer or the city.

"It is a suitable replacement for the much loved Brighton Wheel that has sadly needed to vacate the site.”

A decision on the plans is expected at the start of August.
