VISITOR flights on the i360 have resumed today after a “technical fault” left 185 guests stuck on the attraction for more than two hours.

However the chief executive of the tower has refused to reveal what caused the problem last night.

A group on a networking event was caught up in the breakdown on the vertical cable car after boarding at around 5pm.

They were released at around 7.20pm.

The British Airways i360 chief executive Eleanor Harris said: "We had a technical fault yesterday. I'm not going to go into the detail but we have resolved it now and we are up and running for today. We just don't want to discuss the finer detail of exactly what it was but it is completely resolved."

It is not the first time the attraction, which opened last month lifting guests 450 feet into the air for a 360-degree view of the Brighton coastline, has suffered a technical hitch.

Just four days earlier, a fault left the seafront tourist attraction out of action for more than an hour.

Visitors to the i360 on Sunday were left disappointed when the pod was taken out of operation.

One passenger said: “Many passengers, including me, waiting in the increasingly cold wind gave up waiting after 20 minutes and got refunds.”

Mrs Harris, speaking on BBC Radio Sussex’s Breakfast programme, said: "So what we will do is release a longer statement later on next week to go into some more of the detail of yesterday. But suffice to say it is resolved now and we are going to be up and running.

"This is the first stoppage that we've had. The stoppage yesterday was about 9m in the air. It was a private group who were on board.”

Mrs Harris added: “With any mechanical fault or any issue that occurs you can’t guarantee that. But the information I have from my technicians at this time is that we’re absolutely confident that it is all resolved.”

A spokesman said in a statement: “British Airways i360 experienced a technical fault last night which resulted in the pod stopping for a short time.

“Our engineers worked to resolve the issue and bring the pod back down.

“We would like to apologise to all customers affected; we will be refunding the flights and offering them complimentary tickets to return another time.

“Flights are operating today as normal.”
