ANSWERING the questions today is Richard Skerritt of Skerritts Chartered Financial Planners, with offices in Hove, Worthing and the City of London.

What’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the office?

I am often at the gym before work, so a cold drink helps me focus on the day ahead. Then a look at the financial headlines and on with the day.

What work worries keep you awake at night?

It will tend to be the last thing I was focusing on before I left the office.

Do you lunch in or out of the office?

At my desk – usually a supermarket sushi or salad

Where do you like to meet away from the office?

I am a big fan of the Starbucks office – an hour’s office rental for the cost of two Americanos

What’s the proudest you’ve been with a recent piece of work?

We recently put on and hosted a Fight Night in aid of Action Medical Research. Although not strictly work, I treated it like a client to ensure that all aspects of the event worked like clock-work. We raised £80,000 on the night and I even put my boxing gloves on to bring in a few more pounds.

Where do you network?

Much of our work comes from referrals and client recommendations. I do not spend a huge amount of time networking, but I know how effective these meetings can be. I am a big fan of the Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce and I know their networking events are good.

How do you exercise?

I go to Sol Gilbert at Underground Gym three times a week and really enjoy the boxing sessions. They are full-on, but take my mind away from all my work issues. I come away exhausted, but exhilarated.

What qualities do you look for when looking to hire a new recruit?

We have a wide range of jobs within the business, so I do not need to be too restrictive about specific skill sets. In general, I look for people with energy and with a hunger to succeed. I try to mix these with great customer service and communication skills.

What is the best thing about business in Brighton and Hove?

Wow, where do you start. A fantastic range of restaurants and bars, everything is within walking distance, a buzzing business and community spirit. The city has always had a can-do attitude. I love that! We have the South Downs on one side and our fantastic seafront on the other. And now we have the British Airways i360. Amazing.

What one thing would improve the quality of your working life?

Less paperwork – I’m still waiting for the paperless office that has been promised for so long

What would be your absolute dream job?

I'm probably already doing it. I have a fantastic and varied client base, I get to travel around the UK and the rest of the world and I have the love and support of a very strong family. I know it sounds a bit gooey, but I think I am already living the dream.

What is your top tip for business success?

Treat everybody as you would like to be treated. Show respect and humility in your dealings with people.
