A CLUB promoting husband and wife team have said there will be no late nights or banging tunes at the traditional pub they have just renovated.

Ben and Heather Pistor will open the doors of the newly renovated The West Hill Tavern today at 5pm.

The pair both have backgrounds in bar and club promotion but say they are looking to create a “cosy home-from-home” inspired by the best of Brighton’s more traditional pubs.

The couple took on the premises in Buckingham Place, Brighton, in January and have overseen six weeks of refurbishment totalling £70,000 with landlord NewRiver.

It ends a period of uncertainty for the historic inn on the hillside walk up from Brighton Station which is among a number of city pubs vying for “the best view in Brighton”.

It was built in 1852 and was previously known as The Belle Vue.

The couple recently “soft launched” the renovated venue, reportedly to rave reviews from locals.

Mrs Pistor founded design and marketing consultancy Jane Doe Creates during her maternity leave and has used her own interior design skills to take the pub back to more traditional colour schemes, opened up original fireplaces and brought hidden features back to life.

In addition to interior renovations, the venue has also undergone significant structural work organised by its London-based landlord which owns a £1.3 billion property portfolio including 33 shopping centres, 22 retail warehouses, 15 high street stores and 355 pubs.

As well as a new look, the venue gets new smells and tastes with a menu of slow-cooked meats, pub snacks, vegetarian treats and Sunday roasts overseen by Mrs Pistor’s brother and chef, Tim Lawton.

A programme of nostalgic music, quiz nights, musical bingo, acoustic bluegrass sessions, a traditional meat raffle, and national and international anniversary celebrations will be held at the venue.

Mrs Pistor said: “It will be a traditional, family friendly pub. There will be none of that 3am malarkey.

“We still have a late night licence but we won’t be using it – we will be closing at midnight.

“We love The Battle of Trafalgar, The Sussex Yeoman, The Lion and Lobster – they are how pubs should be.”

Mr Pistor said: “This is the start of a new journey for us and we’re excited to be given the opportunity to breathe life back into one of Brighton’s traditional, local pubs.

“The pub felt a little tired and in need of some investment, both financially and emotionally, and we’re delighted to be able to use our skills and passion to nurture it back.”
