THE first Olympian to ever win a medal in badminton’s men’s doubles for Britain opened Aldi’s new store in Barnfield Drive, Chichester to a large queue of eager shoppers.

Athlete Chris Langridge - who alongside his partner Marcus Ellis, won a bronze medal in Rio last year - handed out jam-packed Super 6 bags to eager shoppers,

Chris said: “I really enjoyed opening the new store.

“Everyone in the crowd was excited to explore their new supermarket and many had been up since the early hours.

Aldi is also marking the new store opening by donating a cheque of £500 to The Sussex Snowdrop Trust, which provides ‘nursing care at home’ for children who have a life-threatening illness or who may be terminally ill.

Thirty-five new jobs have been created for the Chichester store and Aldi is still recruiting for a variety of roles.

Store Manager Steve Newlyn said: “It was great fun opening our doors to the Chichester community.

“We couldn’t believe the size of queue, we all enjoyed welcoming everyone inside.

“Chris was great with our customers and many made sure they got a selfie with him before they headed down the aisles.

“We look forward to welcoming lots more customers, ensuring they enjoy their new store and the quality products we provide at amazing prices.”

Aldi is the UK’s fifth largest supermarket with more than 700 stores and over 29,000 staff.

The company has more than doubled its market share since 2010.

This year Aldi will open around 70 stores. By 2022 Aldi will operate over 1,000 stores.
