Licensing row erupts as Western Road bar applies for opening hours extension
Proposals to extend opening hours at a Western Road bar to 4am each night have been met with opposition from neighbouring residents.
The Bank bar, formerly known as Atlas Lounge, is situated on Western Road next to Norfolk Square. Following an application to Brighton and Hove City Council to extend its opening hours further into the night, neighbours have expressed concerns about resulting noise and disruptive behaviour.
Councillor Paul Elwood, Liberal Democrat representative for the Brunswick and Adelaide ward, said: "There is significant concern over this application from residents worried that such late night drinking will impact negatively on their homes. This bar is adjacent to residential streets and surrounding homes will inevitably be disturbed very late at night and early morning.
"There is no objection to well rounded neighbourhood pubs and venues but 4am is simply not reasonable." He went on to vow to "fight this application tooth and nail".
However, Bank bar manager David Melo was today keen to reassure concerned neighbours that all measures would taken to ensure noise is kept to a minimum should their application be approved by local authority.
"We will work to ensure no neighbours are disturbed. We have always done our best to make sure our customers and neighbours are happy.
"There has only ever been one complaint from a local about noise which we immediately addressed, and we'll continue that courtesy if we're open later into the night."
Residents are being advised to contact EHL.Safety@brighton-hove.gov.uk with their thoughts on the matter by Friday, March 4 before a decision is made by the council.
