The Salvation Army in Hove was given a boost when another charity gave it a cheque for £3,500.

Captains Doug and Michelle Hayter received the money from Hove and Portslade Aid in Sickness to help with rebuilding work.

Mrs Hayter said: “It was a blessing. It enabled us to do more than we had ever imagined.”

The money has gone towards new sofas and a tea and coffee machine to attract more people to come in for a drink and a chat.

Phillip Hadley, a bus driver visiting the shop in Sackville Road, said: “It’s a wonderful area to chill out.”

The charity offers food parcels to those in need and gives financial and employment advice. Facilities include a private room for advice sessions.
