A youth project run for 9-13 year olds is looking for more funding and support to keep going in Coldean.

The scheme, which began in 2007, is just about getting by on a grant given to it a few years ago. Oshik Romem of Reeves Hill started the project which gives children the opportunity to socialise, after moving to Brighton in 2006.

Mr Romem runs the project which aims to help children develop new friendships and gain experience in activities that they wouldn't normally try out. Three other volunteers help to operate the project, two of which are university students, but it is still in need of more youth workers to help run the scheme.

The project costs between £3,000 and £5,000 a year to run and needs some funds if it is to keep going. Mr Romem said: “I want to give kids beautiful memories that they will remember forever.” Mr Romem also plans to extend the project, which runs every Thursday evening during term times at the Church Hall, to 16 year olds should more funding become available.

Mr Romem said: “Six years ago there was nowhere for kids to go in Coldean. I wanted somewhere for my Children and others to make friends and meet people.”

There is plenty for the kids to do whilst they are at the venue. As well as having fun they can learn vital life skills such as cooking, arts and crafts, developing their social skills and occasionally going swimming.

There is also a big community feel to the centre as the kids that go there do a yearly project for the community and in return are rewarded with an outdoor trip.

Mr Romem explained: “In the past, the children have been picking up litter and car washing and we have rewarded them by taking them bowling and for night walks in the woods.”

Parents also think that the project is a great idea. Graham Francis, whose child goes to the project, is full of praise for Mr Romem and the other volunteers.

“It’s a great place for children to meet other kids and have fun. I would like to see it run on a more regular basis, the kids would love it,” said Mr Francis.

He went on to say he felt the place needed some funding to keep going and that the volunteers were great with the kids.

Ryan said: “I love to play sport whilst I am there and really enjoy the outdoor trips that are run yearly.
