A theatre has received a £2,000 boost towards repairing its heating system to keep its audiences warm.

Seaford Musical Theatre, in Saxon Lane, was among four good causes shortlisted for a share of the £6,500 award from Lloyd’s Bank Community Fund.

Shar Turnbull, chair of Seaford Musical Theatre said: “We are delighted to have come second and to have received such a substantial amount of money; we are extremely grateful to Lloyds and all who voted for us.”

The community theatre, which has 40 adult and 70 junior members, relies heavily on grants and donations from supporters for its upkeep.

Repairs and the new boiler will cost around £7,000.

With donations from the theatre’s president and proceeds from the last junior production, they are now halfway there.

To cover the shortfall the theatre has organised fundraising performances and a Santa’s grotto.

Miss Turnbull said: “Fortunately it has been very mild but it is essential the work is done soon.

"Rehearsals are under way for our pantomime, Aladdin and the theatre is used weekly by young and older people.”

In total 4,114 votes were cast online, by Twitter and text, and in branches of Lloyd’s bank.

The good cause with the most votes was Downs View School. It received 32% of the vote and a £3,000 award to refurbish accommodation for children with complex needs.

Seaford Musical Theatre came second with 25.3% just ahead of Lewes Food Bank which received £1,000 for its 24.3% vote share.

The Seaford Museum and Heritage Society received 18.4% of the votes and £500 to install disabled access.
