A young ballroom dancer has won a series of medals in a competition in Cologne.

Oscar Saunders, nine, from Patcham, won a gold medal in the waltz, along with two silvers and a bronze in the Medallist dance competition in Germany.

Oscar said: “I was really happy because I didn’t think I’d come in the top three.”

Oscar was chosen by his dance school, East Sussex Dance, to participate in the competition, which comprised 200 dancers.

Emma Saunders, Oscar’s mother, said: “I was absolutely delighted and extremely proud of him and his partner.”

Oscar, and his partner Eliza, will now be participating in the national finals in November.

Strictly Come Dancing inspired Oscar to learn ballroom dancing two and a half years ago, and Emma says that since he started, he has gone from strength to strength.

Speaking about the finals, Oscar said: “I’m excited, and I really want to do better than last year.”
