A musical mum has launched a unique singing group for new parents and their babies.

Patcham resident Julie Nye, 45, has set up ‘Lullababes’ as an innovative group in which parents can learn and sing lullabies to aid bonding with their new additions.

Julie teaches traditional and modern lullabies by ear, and parents can enjoy singing together in groups within a supportive and nurturing environment.

Julie said: “I remember what it was like when I first had my daughter. As a new mum, you’re thrust into this whole new world and you want to connect with other parents. I found other mother-and-baby groups too overwhelming, and I wanted something more gentle.”

Held in Brighton and Lewes, ‘Lullababes’ groups are warm and welcoming and offer a chance to meet other parents during what can be an isolated and exhausting time.

Julie said: “Singing is a universal language, and mothers have been singing to their babies for thousands of years. It’s a natural way for babies to connect; it soothes them and makes them feel secure.”

No singing experience is necessary, as Julie reassures those who are apprehensive about their singing abilities: “You don’t have to be a great singer – it’s all about communicating. I want to give parents the tools they need to be able to calm and comfort their babies. It’s a real confidence-booster.”

Julie, who has a daughter Anna, aged 11, is passionate about music and has previous experience holding other singing workshops, as well as teaching music in primary schools.

The 1 ½ hour Brighton group sessions are at 10am & 1.30pm on Mondays, and Tuesdays are 1 hour 15 minutes at 10am in Lewes.

Parents who attend ‘Lullababes’ classes in Brighton throughout July will be in for an extra treat, as there will be delicious homemade cake provided.
