A brass band is blowing its own trumpet after a fine performance in a national competition.

The Hangleton Band, from Hove, came second in the regional heats of the National Brass Band Championships.

The band will now compete in the national finals in Harrogate in September.

Musical director Matthew Pollard said: "This is an incredible achievement.

"Everyone has worked flat out for the last four months in the run-up to this competition. It really is wonderful that their dedication and commitment has been recognised."

The band, which rehearses at Hangleton Junior School, was founded in 1965 by the then deputy headmaster, Bert Osgood.

Its members now need to raise about £3,000 to pay for the transport and accommodation costs for the finals.

Anyone wanting to sponsor the band should call Mr Pollard on 01273 243358.
