The dirtiest bus stop in Brighton

There is a bus stop shelter in Brighton which must be both the quaintest and yet dirtiest bus stop. As a relic of the tramways which ran for 38 years from 1901, the old tram shelter opposite the junction with Surrenden Road on Ditchling Road is a sad testimony to something, be it lack of pride in our urban townscape or otherwise.

A resident said, as she waited nearby: “I would be embarrassed even to be seen standing in it. The seats and floor boards need to be repaired and certainly the stench drives any passenger into the rain.”

There are two other tram shelters in use as bus stops; one in Queen's Park Road and another in Dyke Road. All are Grade II listed buildings.

Originally, they were constructed in rustic wood with glass windows. The recent use of white paint was an attempt to clean them up.

It would be easy to improve them so they become the comfiest and prettiest bus stops in the whole of Brighton and Hove. One which any passenger would be proud to sit in.
