The Camelford Arms update

The Camelford Arms in Camelford Street was granted the licence for the day of the Brighton Marathon next Sunday (15 April) despite the objection by Sussex Police.

The licensing panel heard that the owners held three events outside the premises last year without any complaints. Plans to put out tables and chairs were withdrawn at a late stage before the hearing, following discussions with the Police.

Although Camelford Street is not formally being closed for the marathon, it would be inaccessible to traffic for part of the day because of the race, the panel was told.

The Camelford will be able to sell drinks from 11am to 11.30pm on Sunday, with customers able to drink and eat in the street until 8pm.

Next week (Monday, April 16) the same pub will be asking the panel for an permanent extra hour of trading on Friday and Saturday nights, to alter a condition about the use of microphones and how the front lobby door should be closed at night.

More than 14 objections have been made by residents in the immediate vicinity to the increased use of the pub. The pub has a frontage in Camelford Street and a rear back alley entrance in Margaret Street. Local Residents' Associations, Sussex Police and The Environmental Protection Team have also objected.
