Bond Street Laine saga, part 2½ : a correction

The council agreed to carry out a further consultation in respect to the proposed re-naming of Bond Street Laine, as reported last week (14th April 2012), and the notice about it was posted today April 27th. It was incorrectly reported that it would start on April 19th.
Objections to the re-naming have to been lodged in writing at Brighton Magistrates' Court (Edwards St, BN2 0LG) within 21 consecutive days after April 27th viz: by May 18th.
If there has been any objection to the re-naming the matter will be heard in open court and objectors, as appellants, the Council and the Brighton Society (who had applied for the name-change in the first instance) will have the opportunity to put their case, verbally, to the magistrates who will then make the decision.
Other adjoining authorities, such as Lewes DC, have Advice Notes which specifically mention that “(Re-naming a street) is a very time-consuming process and re-naming streets may cause costs and /or disruption to individual occupiers and wherever possible should be avoided. This is usually only done as a last resort i.e. re-naming a street is normally only considered when changes occur which give rise (or are likely to give rise) to problems for the Emergency Services.”
The area between North Street and Spring Walks (later renamed Church Street) pre-dates the North Laine area and the use of this term (Bond Street Laine) reflects the current quirkiness and character of the area and thus perfectly appropriate as the street name. It leads directly into a small cul-de-sac at the end of Jew Street, with delightfull murals emblematic of the area.
There is no similar guidance note for Brighton & Hove City Council.
Depending on the outcome of that, Bond Street Laine may or may not be re-named Bond Street Lane on or after June 8th (an arbitrary date, to allow for processing the decision.)
