A new bar opened in Lewes last week - the Buddha Bar - and another is set to open soon. With the persistent news that public houses and bars are closing at an increasingly alarming rate this can, hopefully, be taken as a sign that the local economy is picking up, or that with many people moving to, or returning to, the town, a sign that Lewes does not currently offer the variety of drinking holes desired. One consequence maybe that Brighton bars suffer a - slight - downturn in trade as the people of the town decide to stay local and forgo the train, another maybe an increased need for policing in Lewes: the Buddha Bar currently employs doormen (an unusual sight here), though there have been no reports of any signs of trouble. Nonetheless with Tesco hoping to expand, and Intersport moving to larger premises, fingers are crossed that many new local jobs can be created and less lost.
