Football Season Drawing to a Close
The football season is drawing to a close, with the last home game being played by Lewes FC’s first team this evening (Tuesday) when the relatively young Sussex squad take on Bath FC in a significant match for both sides. The visitors are looking to secure a play-off place whilst the Rooks need two points from their final two matches to guarantee another season in Blue Square South.
It has been a tough season for the hosts, who have managed to survive – thus far – on the good will of all, and attendance at the gates has thankfully increased, in part due to the fact that the admission price has been temporarily cut and that for youngsters has been shelved (for the time being).
A reworking of the bar and food facilities has also helped – with a hugely successful beer and cider festival in February. Other events are planned, such as Pandemonium which will see Mark Chadwick of the Levellers headline the music side of things on the May Bank holiday, replete with food and plenty of Harveys.
Lewes owes a huge debt of gratitude to Steve Ibbitson, the town’s personality of the year, for his and others tireless work, all for the grand sum of no pay. The fact that the club is still in existence is solely due to those who have given their time and talents… may that be celebrated tonight, at Pandemonium and the upcoming 125th anniversary in September.
