The Extreme Mountain Bike Show has rewarded Moulsecoomb Primary School for cycling a combined 365 miles at the BikeStock community event.

Sustrans, a national sustainable transport charity, invited the crew to perform for all year groups after they achieved second place in the schools category.

The troupe are all championship winners who enthralled onlookers with plenty of mesmorising tricks and techniques on Friday, September 26th.

BikeStock also saw the setting of a new world record by Ben Sherratt, 44, who cycled 384 off-road miles over 48 consecutive hours on a trail in Stanmer Park.

Mr Sherratt is the area’s Bike-It Officer for Sustrans, promoting the charity’s vision at 50 of Brighton’s schools and aiming to change people’s attitudes towards how they travel.

He said: “People said that we would never get Moulsecoomb cycling but I have never been made to feel so welcome in a community as I have been by all the parents and kids.”

The school has embraced two wheels like few others around the country, providing extra-curricular cycling clubs, training to all year groups and a termly cycling sports-day.

A free service is available several times per term at which a group of volunteers will repair any bike brought along throughout the day.

Additionally, the school are applying for funding in order to build a storage and workshop area so that members can learn about care and maintenance.

Teaching assistant Ian Smith contributes much of his time to supervising these activities and believes strongly in the benefits of cycling for all ages.

He said: “The children don’t have to get in a car, they can get on a bike, and what they are doing is exercising as they are travelling, which is ticking all the boxes.”

Sustrans envision that four out of five journeys will be made on foot, by bike or by public transport by 2020, with more information available at www.sustrans.org.uk
