Catering students are helping to raise funds with a Brighton woman whose son died from heart disease.

Families and businesses across the city will take part the Great Pancake Party tomorrow.

The events aim to raise money towards cardiomyopathy education for doctors and nurses.

Cardiomyopathy affects people of all ages, including babies, usually runs in families and is the biggest medical cause of sudden death in the under 35s.

Catering students at City College Brighton and Hove are helping a Brighton woman whose son died from the heart muscle disease cardiomyopathy to raise money by staging a Great Pancake Party to help the fight against the disease.

Angela Simpson has been a Cardiomyopathy Association supporter for nearly a decade. Her eldest son Dominic died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in 2004 at the age of 40. Her younger son, her sister and she herself are all affected by the condition. This type of cardiomyopathy causes the heart muscle to thicken. This can affect the heart’s ability to pump and cause heart rhythm problems.

She is being supported by the catering department at City College Brighton and Hove thanks to her friend Allan Paul, a catering lecturer at the college in Pelham Street who sized the opportunity to support the cause and provide the students with an additional learning experience.

The party takes place on Thursday, March 6, from 5-8pm at Gallery Restaurant, City College, Whitecross Street, Brighton.

Thee charity, which provides information and support to affected families, aims to raise £25,000 from this year’s parties, which run from March 1 to 8, including Pancake Day on March 4.

Tickets can be bought from the restaurant in advance or on the door. They cost £5 for students or £7.50 for staff and visitors.

Angela Simpson said: “We hope as many people as possible will come along and help us raise money for the CMA. Not only is it a deserving cause, but the evening will be a lot of fun – it’ll be a great chance to sample the mouth-watering culinary delights of Brighton’s top future chefs! I’m immensely grateful to Allan and his colleagues for agreeing to put on this event with me.”
