Seaford Bonfire society is holding its second event in October.

On Saturday, October 20 its 200-strong membership plans to hold a procession through Seaford from 7.15pm.

Society historian Kevin Gordon said: “There have been many smaller bonfire events in the past few years, but we wanted to arrange a large bonfire, a spectacular fireworks display and a procession through the town that the whole community could enjoy.”

The procession starts from the organisation's headquarters, heading towards the war memorial in Sutton Park Road for prayers.

It will continue on to the Martello Fields for the bonfire and grand firework display.

Since it was re-established in 2011, Seaford Bonfire Society has surpassed all expectations.

Its first parade attracted hundreds of people to the streets of Seaford and Mr Gordon hopes to build a new tradition.

Seaford had a long tradition of bonfire celebrations, but had only had small-scale displays since the 1970s.

Mr Gordon said: “We were astounded by the number of people who came out to see our procession, we never expected to put on such a successful event within a few months of being formed.”

He added: “I think the society has managed to provide a spectacular and safe event which continues the long tradition of bonfire in the town and hopefully will do for many years to come.”
