Withdean Park held its sixth Lilac Lark Fair last Sunday but despite the crowds the park is in desperate need of a gardener.
In the 1980s the park had two gardeners. Today volunteers maintain it one day a month. Philippa Shaw, Co-ordinator of Friends of Withdean Park, said: “Just one gardener would be nice.”
There are five parks in Brighton that have Green Flag status. To receive this award, the park needs to be regularly maintained.
A member of the CityParks, the council office that maintains the city’s parks, said: “Withdean Park has never been submitted for inclusion in the Green Flag award scheme as it does not fulfil/comprise the requisite criteria for the scheme.”
Ms Shaw said: “They don’t consider our garden worthy and it’s absolutely disgraceful.”
The lilacs at the park were once designated a National Collection. However, the collection was not maintained so the park lost this title in 2009.
