Opera star comes to Crew Club
5:01pm Thursday 17th September 2009 in Community By Rebecca Evans, Will Jones and Emma Laurence, community correspondents
Gareth Malone, star of the BBC’s “The Choir,” is looking for fresh talent to appear on stage at the world-famous Glyndebourne Opera House.
Malone will be coaching 14-19 year olds in music, singing and drama at Whitehawk’s Crew Club on Saturday 26th September, at the same time scouting for potential singers to take part in new youth opera ‘Knight Crew’.
The opera, created by Glyndebourne’s Julian Phillips, re-tells a King Arthur legend in a contemporary gangland setting.
For the first time young people from the whole of East Sussex will have the chance to audition and, if successful, perform alongside a professional orchestra.
Kevin Grist, Music and Arts Development Worker at the Crew Club said: “It’s a chance for kids to participate in types of music they don’t normally get access to. It’s a positive thing in general; it gives them confidence and helps pockets of the community come together.”
Councillor Warren Morgan, Crew Club trustee, said: “I am enormously proud of the work they do with local young people. I know from their annual showcase event that they are now one of the leading centres of excellence in the city for performing arts, and this is yet another example of them branching out into new fields."
