Some of Britain's biggest lottery winners exchanged tales of their good fortune today at a gathering to mark the creation of more than 200 millionaires in the South East.

More than £1 billion has been paid out in major prizes amounting to £50,000 or more in the region since the National Lottery launched in 1994.

Several winners from across the South East attended the reception at the five-star Grand Hotel on Brighton seafront to share experiences of their winnings.

Among them was Mark Gardiner, from Hastings, who shared the biggest Lottery payout, £22.6 million, with friend Paul Maddison in June 1995.

Since the win he has invested in his local football club, built up his double glazing business and shared his wealth with family and friends, while still living in Hastings.

Mr Gardiner was joined by fellow winners including Mick Maplesden, also from Hastings, Malcolm Wilkins, from near Margate, Kent, and David and Gaynor Funnell, from Hailsham, East Sussex.

A Camelot spokeswoman said 480 jackpot winners have been created in the South East since the lottery's 1994 launch.

And more than £19 billion has been raised for good causes.

If anyone happens to know any of these people please pass on contact details as I'd like to scrounge a few quid to start a business... and a few new shirts would be quite nice too.

and a car...

and a 2 bedroom flat...

and a new hat...

and a haircut.

That'll do.

Thanks

I have played the lottery only once since it began, but was lucky enough to hit the jackpot, it paid me 3.6 million pounds and I intend to give it all away before I die, so whenever I see a deserving person who is down on their luck, I give them a couple of thousand pounds to cheer them up, this makes me feel very happy every time I do it, I am a single, fit looking 60 year old male who finds it difficult to talk to women, I have no family or friends and this is the only thing that gives me pleasure. I also find that since winning the money my life has become even more lonely than before because I feel that the money and not would be the attraction for a potential soul mate.

Paul from Rottingdean.
If your post is not a wind up, I feel sorry for you. People think that money can buy happiness but your post is an example of where it doesn't. The money has not given you family or friends back and you do not trust new people that you meet as they may just be after your money. It sounds like you get pleasure from helping people so, as you clearly do not need to work, why don't you do volunteer work! There are so many causes that you could help with both your time and this money. Also, unless you 'flash the cash' new people that you meet would not necessarily know that you had won the lottery unless you tell them. If 'i've won the lottery' is one of your chat up lines, making the money an important part of you, then you will only attract people for whom money is the most important part of a relationship! I hope people aren’t getting the wrong impression of me and think that I want something in return for my money; all I am searching for is true romantic love from a woman I can adore and care for in the way most women deserve to be adored and cared for, because every woman is beautiful in one way or another.

Three years ago, Paul gave me several thousand to get me back on my feet at a time in my life when things couldn't get much worse, he asked me not to mention his kind deed to anyone else, but I feel I must thank him and this is the only way of doing it, because I don't know where he lives and I only came across his posting by chance.

Paul
sorry to hear that money has not really brought happiness. Rather than giving to individuals there is the alternative of good community projects that bring joy to people. I work for a charity that helps people with mental illness and physical disability and we have been turned down by the lottery. If you want to make people happy you could no better than to donate to this charity. We would be most grateful. If interested please reply on this blog.

the charity provides meaningful work for people experiencing exclusion through mental illness. The work involves recycling bicycles and then selling them to the public. We are working with British Waterways on their towpaths to get disabled people using special bikes. contact normstrong73@hotmail
