Lord Bassam's delight

Lord Bassam of Brighton, who championed the stadium as leader of Brighton Council, made his way to North Road to celebrate with the club's officials.

He said: "It's brilliant news. I'm absolutely delighted. It's the right decision and it has been for a long time.

"This is a fantastic day for the city, for the football club and for the fans. I'm proud of everyone who stayed with the cause to help win permission for the stadium.

"Personally I feel vindicated for the work I have put in over the past 12 years. We were right to have a referendum and we reached the right decision.

"Tony Blair once described Hazel Blears as his little ray of sunshine. This will put a smile on the face of the city.

"My hope now is that the detractors will now stop their opposition and work with the city, the club and the fans to get the best possible deal for everyone.

"I appeal to them to end their opposition so we can all go forward together.

"We are now going to have a sports facility and a major venue just at the right time, in the build up to the London Olympics in 2012."

Oh him, what a drip. Did he just gravitate to where the press action was as it had not sought him out? What a loser.

Great news for BHA and the City. Now lets sit back on watch the cling ons emerge.
