Tories welcome stadium decision
Conservatives in Lewes have welcomed the Government's decision to approve a stadium in Falmer.
Jason Sugarman, the party's prospective parliamentary candidate, said: "I'm glad this sorry saga has now ended.
"The community stadium that will now be built will be good for local people as well as football supporters.
"The Liberal Democrats, led by Norman Baker, have risked huge amounts of taxpayers' money trying to block the stadium.
"Instead of wasting time and money on anti-football campaigns and indulging in conspiracy theories about David Kelly, Norman Baker and the Lib Dems need to focus on the big issues for our area such as securing flood defences and improving the A27."
Conservative Lewes District Council councillor Paul Gander added: "This is great news. I'll be wearing Brighton and Hove Albion gear to this Wednesday's council meeting to celebrate the decision."

Conservatives in Lewes back the stadium - but Conservatives in Brighton Kemptown oppose it (even ditching their last Parliamentary candidate over it). They will say and do whatever they think will win a few votes locally.

Jason Sugarman has it wrong again. Lewes Conservatives joined the Lib-Dems in submitting a cross-party appeal against John Prescott's faulty decision, so sniping at the Lib Dems on an important issue is not only silly but unstatesmanlike.

Either way the opposition to this development has wasted time, money and effort that could have been used to benefit the local residents. Based on what has happened it's hard to believe that the opposition were not driven by a footballphobic attitude. Because whilst in an area of outstanding beauty, the site was never that. Was a point of principle being argued? Yes but against football not for beautiful countryside.

I happen to be a resident of Lewes. I feel it is an absolute discrace that the likes of Norman Baker and the Lib Dems should oppose this stadium after two public enquiries. I pay my taxes. I don't want to see my money being wasted, fighting something that will only benefit the wider community. Its an absolute discrace and I shall in no way be voting for the Lib Dems ever again.

Dear Mr Johnson. Don't forget that the two Public Inquiries BOTH found in Lewes District Council's favour! Lewes District Council is compelled to spend money when a public inquiry takes place, as it is the Planning Authority. The only time and money wasted was when John Prescott called it in and delivered a flawed decision, quashed in the High Court. Lewes DC will be reimbursed by Government. And it was an across-party decision to appeal, not a Lib Dem one. Let's keep the facts straight.

Would this be like the factual pictures LDC published, pretending to be the stadium site? Is that the kind of 'straight' you'd like us to be Mr Gardiner?
