Falmer a disgrace, say campaigners
Countryside campaigners have branded today's green-light for a stadium at Falmer disgraceful.
Richard Allden, Campaign for the Protection of Rural England Sussex planning officer, said: "The decision by the Government to allow a football stadium to be built at Falmer is a sad blow to everyone who loves the Sussex Downs.
"Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are meant to be given the highest level of protection in planning law so it's disgraceful that this development had been given permission when it will damage the very landscape that should be protected.
"When we saw the inspector's recommendation that the land for Falmer stadium should be excluded from the National Park we feared that this could be used to try and justify permission for the stadium.
"What people are forgetting is that it will still be within the AONB and right next to the National Park boundary and so the impacts will be felt for miles around."
Emma Marrington, CPRE's Rural Policy Campaigner, added: "The area is still relatively tranquil and this will be damaged irreparably.
"There will be more pressure on local transport infrastructure and yet another new source of light pollution .
"The saying "death by a thousand cuts" is certainly true for the South Downs today."

Toads Hole valley is also an area of outstanding natural beauty. I don,t hear Mr Allen commenting on the mess that the motor x bikes have made there. I seem to remember there were protected species and plants there aswell.

What a laughable response. I don't recall either the A27 or the University being "Tranquil" and this development in what is actually an urban area hardly amounts to the end to the South Downs as we know them! Well done to the Government for a sensible and correct decision supported by the majority - it is called democracy!
Now will all the NIMBYs shup up for good

I reckon I speak for the majority of Brighton supporters when I say we love our town, we love Sussex and all it offers. The downs are indeed a beautiful feature of OUR town and should be protected. But where the stadium is being built is not the a pretty site, it is not secluded and tranquil. It is not this haven of peace and beauty these various organisations claim it to be. Do not insult out intelligence, or integrity by telling us what we should or should not allow within an area we know better than the majority of people objecting on here. (Yeah, I live in Woolwich now, but 29 years of living in Brighton from birth gives me the right to comment.)

Interestingly, the decision letter from Mrs Blears states that the development will cause "considerable harm to the AONB". Staggering.
If ever there were a political decision, this is it.

How this area of land can be qualified as an AONB is beyond me, I mean we're not talking about the Long Man of Wilmington here are we...A major trunk road, railway, University, Southern Water Offices and new Halls of Residence is not exactly a Village set in rolling hills is it....

This is a sad day indeed. Its not as if Brighton is a premier football team, and I really don't think the destruction of Falmer is warranted nor is it going to help those fools kicking balls. Who ever gave this the go-ahead needs to be shot!

The only thing truly "staggering" are the constant exaggerations and over-emotive claims of the opponents.
I don't want to see any beautiful downland destroyed around the city that I love. But this is NOT beautiful downland. Get the diggers in as soon as possible.

Cynthia, you are living in the dark ages. Check out Withdean since we moved there, the place is cleaner and there has been no dis-order from the so called thugs you describe. Football has moved on , it's now a real community thing. Perhaps you should move on too and stop being so bitter.

I totally agree that areas of outstanding natural beauty should be protected. Anyone who has been to Falmer and actually seen, or driven past, the site will realise that this is not one of them. It's about time that Brighton, the town and football club had a stadium to be proud of. This decision will benefit the whole community, so let's hope that both sides can work together from now on.

What are you talking about Nick? "The destruction of Falmer"?? Is the village itself being flattened? Is the duck pond being filled in? NO!!! A football stadium is being built on a ploughed up piece of land next to a huge university, a dual carriageway and close to a railway line. Not exactly the middle of nowhere, is it??

Lets just agree to differ and you can get on with what I am sure is a worthwhile existance with many other topics that would benefit from your careful examination of the facts and considered opinions!

From some of the descriptions of the stadium site used by opponents, you'd think it was being built in the middle of Stanmer Park and not a brown-field site next to a dual-carriage way, railway line and two Universities.
I'm also very disappointed in the comments that have, as an Albion fan, already branded me a thug and not a lover of Sussex and its Downs.

I care little for myself, my wife (who attends games on occasions) & my 6 year old son being accused of being disreputable & violent.
I care even less for people who not only generalise on such a crass basis but do so without any factual foundation.
Perhaps you should contact Sussex Police to obtain the number of arrests at Withdean Stadium?
Perhaps you should consult those who live locally to Withdean Stadium to gauge their views on supporter behaviour?
I live a stones throw away from the stadium & have never seen anything other than civil behaviour from supporters who are NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS.
PS - If you are so keen on preserving Sussex best interests why put-down the local club that has been a part of the community fabric for over 100 years? Where is your civic pride? I guess it disappeared with your ability to handle facts & make a balanced comment.

I'm glad that the stadium will be built and I'm glad that those fogeys at LDC have been beaten.
I'd consider Devils Dyke to be an AONB, as is Chanctonbury Ring, Cissbury Ring, Clapham Woods, the downs around Firle but a field surrounded by a university, a fitness centre, Southern Water offices, an main A road and a railway line is not and can never be an AONB!!!!!!
By the way, I live in Westdene and have never seen or experienced any aggro from the football supporters - we have more trouble from little chavs using the area as a race track in their crappy little souped up bangers than we do from football supporters.
NIMBY's 0 - Common Sense - 1.

About time this decision was made, superb result for Brighton and Sussex as a whole.
I am also pleased to LDC beaten on this issue. They have FORCED through a decision regarding the waste incinerator in Newhaven despite thousands and thousands of objections from residents, the ratio of for and against was nothing compared to the Albion's new stadium where the majority did want it at Falmer. LDC are hypocritical and short sighted and in my opinion do not represent the people they are supposed to be representing at all.

I would like to add that over the last 10 years of trying to get a ground Brighton have played in the second highest league in the land for three of those years. I think for a club playing in a field this is pretty good.
I think Sussex should hold its head up high, that we have a club that can perform as well has it has done on a shoe string budget. Once the new ground has been constructed Brighton will have a platform to build and become one of the best clubs in the South again.
As for the site the ground will be bit on, come on I lived in Moulscoombe not a stones throw away from the site. Can anybody really call it a AONB I don’t think so and that has been the whole point, the nimbys have been trying to run a club with a 100 years history into the ground, because they don’t want it on there doorstep.
The area the ground will be built in needs to be re-generated as there is so much social disorder, down to the area being poor and run down. This will create jobs and bring much need money into this area of Brighton. This isn’t a case of just a football stadium it’s also about a community that needs to be re-built, and I think a lot of people have forgotten that fact.

I’m sorry weren’t we reading on this web site a few weeks ago how the stadiums site was no longer going to be considered a AONB? How could we destroy such a beautiful area of our county I mean I just love pulling up in my car to admire the views of a busy road, a train line and the building of car parks and student accommodation which is all around the site? I’m sorry you fools but if you wanted to preserve these AONB then you should of thought about this before the university was extended next to where we are going to build our stadium!

When the Community Stadium has been built-then the area will BECOME an AONB. Until then, it's a cra ppy field designated for development.
As for the destruction of Falmer-the A27 and 2 frigging great Unis already took care of that.

campaigners, please will you now put your energy into something that is potentially lethal to the countryside and environment. you all need to oppose 'something' because thats what you do, but have you not realised the incenerator issue in newhaven?? stop complaining up there with a good idea like a stadium, complain down here about this madness that will threaten all of us.

Now, be off with you-back to your knitting.

Not a great football fan, but fully support the decision.
As for anyone who wants to insist that where the stadium is going is an AONB, I give you a challenge. Name the time and date and lets all meet at the field to discuss how beautiful it is!
I think I'm fairly safe in the challenge as anyone who knows the site knows full well it's not an AONB. Further out into the downs, maybe yes, but not the site.

The young people of Sussex desperately need sports role models, sports facilities and a culture of fitness and community.
It would be great if the new stadium helps to inspire our youngsters to do more constructive things with their time.
Well done to all those who stuck at, with narrow minded whingers doing their best to block what can only be a great asset to the county.

I didnt realise that having a dual carriageway, trainline and university buildings in the proximity constituted an area of outstanding Natural Beauty!
It's about time Lewes District Council and the CPRE realised that Falmer is not a rural site, accept what the majority want, stop wasting taxpayers money and let B&HAFC live on as the great Football club we are. They should start fighting the incinerator plans in Newhaven instead.

It's a great day for Sussex and Brighton. People on here are saying that Brighton are a third rate football team but that because Brighton had to get rid of they best player due to not being able to get there ground. They lost not only good players but managers too. I am not a big Seagull fan as I am a Liverpool supporter but I am happy for them and will go along to see some games. Good luck to Brighton now I am sure they will get to the top flight.

Its time to sack everyone at LDC because its obvious they are not fit for purpose, and are wasting council tax payers money without a mandate to do so. Funny how they don't object to the proposed sewage works at Peacehaven or the incinerator at Lewes, but they are so blinded by the hate of football that they will fight this decision to the bitter end, its time they were all thrown out of office.
Talk about inconsistency and hypocrisy, WHY do we have to put up with the self indulgent and NIMBY attitudes of those who get into positions of power for no other reasons than to protect their back yards regardless of what the general public want. Take Chichester District Council as an example, they went ahead, without a mandate, and spent hundreds of thousands of pounds of council tax payer’s money fighting the very idea of the proposed South Downs National Park, simply because they knew it would result in a loss of power and restrict the favours they could hand out to the privileged few land owners, who up until now have controlled most of Sussex and Hampshire without ever being challenged. Whereas, on the other hand, Lewes District Council supported the National Park scheme purely because they believed it would aid their fight against the Falmer football stadium, and because of their blind opposition to football in general, they have ignored the fact that this stadium could be a great asset to other sports as a training and competition venue and if they got on board before its too late they could still have some input into the design and overall use of the stadium in such a way that it will benefit Lewes in a positive way.

Fantastic decision, superb. The opposition started from a corrupt base of misrepresentation and continued though laughable photoshopped images, tried to kill the Club off, and have probably done more harm to the protection of Rural England than they realise themselves. Who is ever going to take them seriously again? Hooligans one and all. Mr Knight, I'm not even Albion, but tonight Sir, English Football salutes you!

I live in North Woodingdean, just the other side of the hill from Falmer. And I am so pleased that we have got our stadium!!! 10 years of ground sharing and an athletic track! Belotti and Archer...you are both scum for what you put our club through! But today is a massive milestone in BHAFC and another one for the history book! I know that i also speak on behalf of my Dad, Mum and 2 sisters. Falmer is clearly the best site for the city stadium, and im over the moon that we now have it!!

In Australia, they argue over how BIG a stadium to build. Not it's location. Everyone realises that a new stadium bring numerous benefits to the local community.
And people wonder why England is so far behind Australia in sporting and lifestyle stakes..
I am delighted that permission has finally been granted and i can enjoy attending games at Falmer in the future.
I only hope the NIMBYS give in gracefully, let bygones be bygones and join the Albion and Brighton City council in building the best stadium in the country.

Unfortunately the thuggish and rude comments from the "pro-falmer" brigade just expose football fans for what they really are.

'Falmer a disgrace - says campaigners'.
A slightly misleading headline but then we are talking about the Argus.
Anyway - I do feel dorry for the residents of Falmer but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
And finally can this be nailed once and for all.
[bold]bold[/bold] THE STADIUM IS BUILT ON LAND WITHIN THE BOUNDARIES OF BRIGHTON AND HOVE.

I do hope that there will be no further reference to the stadium being built in Falmer. It's going to be built in Brighton!!!
