The multimillion-pound redevelopment of Shoreham airport was in doubt tonight as troubled owner Erinaceous remained in emergency talks with its lenders.

The property group, which bought the airport from Brighton and Hove City Council and Worthing Borough Council for £8 million last year, has debts of £140 million.

Now Croydon-based Erinaceous is locked in discussions with its banks after breaching credit agreements and has delayed announcing its half-year results.

A company spokesman said no announcements would be made about Shoreham airport until the results were released, which is likely to be on Friday.

In a statement, the company said: "Discussions with lenders have not yet concluded but are continuing. The board of Erinaceous now intends to announce its interim results as soon as possible but in any event no later than September 28 (Friday)."

Erinaceous' plans for the historic airport - which include building hangars, offices, a fire station and control tower, and an overhaul of the Art Deco terminal building - are expected to create around 200 jobs.

But the project has been beset with problems.

The company was given an August deadline to address Highways Agency concerns about access from the A27 but that has been pushed back until the middle of November.

A further snag arose when a hangar dating back to the Second World War, which had been earmarked for demolition, was given listed status at the eleventh hour.

Erinaceous must now seek special permission to tear down the municipal hangar, which was given Grade II listed status because of its distinctive roof which, according to government inspectors, represented "contemporary interwar trends".

Meanwhile, the company's plans to build flats at the airport - the first scheme of its kind in the country - were scrapped after objections from English Heritage.

So far the problems at Erinaceous have not affected the airport.

Airport manager John Haffenden said: "As far as we are aware we are totally unaffected by the issues at Erinaceous. It's business as normal here. That's all there is to say."

Erinaceous offers architectural and design services, project management, building maintenance and the collection of ground rents and service charges.

The firm's shareholders - who once saw the company valued at £400 million - are said to be baying for blood. A cull of senior management is now expected after the departure of several key personnel since takeover talks collapsed five months ago.

Founder and chief executive Neil Bellis's position is said to be under threat along with that of chairman Nigel Turnbull, a businessman previously charged by the Government with shaking up British corporate governance.

Shares in Erinaceous, which have been hit by expansion and a fraud at one of its subsidiaries last year, are now trading at around 55p - down 88 per cent from the start of the year - giving the company a market value of about £85 million.

Theer are a lot of unanswered questions about what has been happening at the Airport.

Look at the way it lost out on that landfill deal.

Management?! Has this man Haffenden got his hand on the rudder (or whatever the aeronautical equivalent might be).

It is always very odd how often a "preferred bidder" emerges, and lo and behold the bidder turns out to be dodgily financed.

Not a lot a choice regarding the land fill CAA required access to both ends of the runway for emergency vehicles. Access to the south end without stopping use of the runway could only be gain by the farm developement company's land and their terms for any land fill. However there were avantages of this being done for the local community.

The "secret" agenda of this company is to turn Shoreham airport into another Bournemouth with short-haul jets to France and Spain. The area doesn't need it, the site is too small and hopefully Orinoco or whatever they call themselves are about to go bust.

A bigger airport with the capability of taking big jets would be better. They could take off and land over the sea and I wouldnt have to go to gatwick to get my holiday flights. Expand shoeham aerodrome.

Well what a surprise, this area was marked years ago to be either a golf course or housing estate, it will happen whether the public want it or not and there are plans. With this present owner going under financially, i bet we will soon hear that someone else is buying it even cheaper than the cheap 8 million our crap council sold it for. Brighton and hove council disgraced them selves then and now it will come back to haunt them, I hope they are pleased with them selves for letting the public down. Why not just give it away and turn the beautiful area of shoreham airport into a land fill site and then build an incenertor and just to really destroy the area, put a power station up....I blame the MP's of Sussex

I totally agree with Russ from Lancing. The rumours of a golf course or housing estate are becoming more and more apparrant. Personally I feel its time for a public investigation into why the airport was sold so cheaply to Erinaceous who does not have the ability to carry out its obligations as stated a few years ago. The deal was done behind closed doors as always. Lets make the councilors responsible back then answer for this outrageous mistrust of public interest and finance. £8million was not enough and they new it.

Don't disillusion yourself William...
Aircraft have to take off and land into the prevailing wind. Therefore it follows that if on any particular day they are taking off over the sea, they will be coming into land over the land (and vice versa) They can't do both unless theres absolutely no wind which, being by the sea, is distinctly unlikely...

Oh well. I take your poin Stu. But a few planes an hour coming into land or taking off over Brighton central wouldnt be a big price to pay for my convienience

The biggest problem with Shoreham Airport is John Haffenden. He thinks he owns the airport and has taken to many back handers in the past

If you want to read the read what people really think of Erinaceous you should check out this link for details of their dealings with leaseholders. This shows the disastisfaction of of all the companies they own and their sharp practice.

Why oh why did we ever get involved with them????

Nothing but scandal after scandal with Erinaceous and widespread abuses of Leaseholders through their hateful companies including David Glass, Hercules, CPM ect.

There is nothing positive to say about this rogue company should have been shut down long ago.

Good Riddence
