Woman left to go blind by health bosses

A pensioner is facing the prospect of going blind before Christmas after the NHS refused to pay for drugs that would save her sight.

Mary Bristow-Jones, 88, suffers from wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the biggest cause of blindness in the UK, and is already blind in her right eye because of the condition.

But West Sussex Primary Care Trust has told the former secretary she does not qualify for help to save the diminishing sight in her 'good' eye.

Mrs Bristow-Jones, of Forester Road, Southgate, Crawley, said: "I feel very said and very shocked. In the summer I had to go and have an unrelated operation in East Surrey Hospital and they were so kind and so good to me and did everything.

"They got me better but now I'm told that somebody doesn't care. I'm already blind in one eye and the other is getting worse.

"The other eye went suddenly and it could go any time really. I hope it lasts a reasonable time."

She added: "I went to the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton and had all the tests. When they were finished I asked what the treatment was and the doctor said there was no treatment available.

"He did say I was a very good case for funding and wrote an email to West Sussex PCT. A week or two went by and I had a letter saying that I had been refused."

AMD can be treated with one of two drugs, Avastin or Lucentis.

Avastin is available privately but not on the NHS as it is only been licenced for the treatment of bowel cancer.

Lucentis's use is currently decided by individual NHS trusts as the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (Nice) is yet to issue guidance on its use in the NHS.

PCTs are using provisional guidance from Nice to make their own decisions.

A spokesman for West Sussex PCT said: "We understand the distress caused to Mrs Bristow-Jones by the decision not to fund Avastin for AMD.

"In the absence of Nice guidance, requests are considered through the West Sussex PCT's review panel for patients with individual needs.

"The panel takes into account a number of factors including the clinical and cost effectiveness of the drug, information presented by the professionals involved in the patient's care and any national or local guidelines that exist.

"In the interim while awaiting Nice guidance on Lucentis for AMD, the PCT is funding Lucentis for patients who meet the criteria set out in the Nice Appraisal Consultation Document on Lucentis for AMD.

"Unfortunately Mrs Bristow-Jones does not fulfil the eligibility criteria."

Her daughter, Suzanne Perkins, has paid £550 for a dose of Avastin privately to prolong Mrs Bristow-Jones's sight but cannot afford any more.

With the help of the RNIB, an appeal against the decision has been launched.

A spokesman for the RNIB said: "We urge the PCT to reverse its decision and to provide funding for Mrs Bristow-Jones as a matter of great urgency, so there is every possible chance of her remaining sight being saved by treatment recommended by her doctor.

"As with many older people who have wet AMD, for treatment to be effective and to have the best chances of saving a person's sight, it must take place as soon as possible.

"Any delays in treatment are unacceptable."

Each Lucentis injection costs the NHS £1,500 and patients may need several for their sight to stabilise.

West Sussex PCT came under fire Wednesday this week for its use of spin doctors arguing for the closure of accident and emergency and maternity wards.

PR company London Communications Agency has received more than £125,000 from the trust to present the Fit for the Future programme with a positive slant.

West Sussex County Council leader Henry Smith said: "It's difficult for me to comment on individual cases as I'm not familiar with the circumstances but as a general rule it does concern me that the PCT seem glad to spend a considerable amount to sell a bad idea of downgrading hospitals in Sussex when patients need treatment."

Pity she is not a DOG then the treatment would have been mandatory. Can i be first to poke out WSPCT eye with a shaep stick. I feel so sorry for this poor woman and only wish i could afford to help.

What a desparately sad decision. I find it hard to believe that this can happen in a rich country like this, where some people may choose to buy a meal at a posh restaurant, a designer dress or something similar for the cost of a dose or 2 or this treatment. Maybe we need foreign aid.

It would be interesting to know why and how she did not qualify for treatment. For God's sake, she is already blind in one eye.

Typical, just another form of fraud by the unelected civil service and health authorities. You pay for the NHS all your working life then when you need it, you can`t have it, Dare I suggest we get rid of the greedy health trusts and use the millions saved to put back into the actual hospitals ect, as we used to until these parasites came on to the scene.

What a sad sad story.
I wish I was in a position to help this lady.
Maybe the Argus could help out from their Xmas appeal fund?

The WSPCT should hang their collective heads in shame

West Sussex PCT are an embarrasment to the county and an incentive not to live in the area. Their strategy of centralising services can only put patients lives in danger, due to the very obvious delays that will be caused by needing to transport patients. I do not believe that services should be centralised - without wishing to stir up local interests the absurdity of their plan can be seen where it is proposed to centralise services on the coast, thus absolutely maximising transport time for some patients and putting half the potential catchment area in the sea! - not that I belive that Brighton, as a major centre of population, should lose essential health services.

Presumably the long term care of this lady will not be coming out of their budget, if she ends up losing her sight totally?

Shame on you West Sussex PCT, you have reached a new low. Time for more spin?

But the NHS neads to save money, so that it has plenty of money to treat our wonderful immigrant friends. We are not important anymore. I look forward to Englands civil war in a few years time.

kkki - you are a buffon!
what about money the nhs spends on drug users?
it is nothing to do with immigrants. England has already had a civil war if you look at ENGLISH history.
So can you trace your ancestry back to the britons or are you descended from immigrants as most people are?

Sue, Hove says...
4:10pm Sat 24 Nov 07

It is a disgrace. Only people who have paid in to the NHS for five years at least should be allowed to have treatment then West Sussex PCT would be able to afford the treatment.

Time for action. Go on to the number 10 website www.number-10.gov.uk and email Gordon Brown. I'm going to do it right away, and let him know that, if he wants any chance at all of getting my vote in the next election, he'd better pull his finger out and do the job!

When these Health Authorities want to save expenditure they look for an easy target. An 88 yr old partly blind person is a sitting target. She has probably paid National Health throughout her working life, has no prison record and pays her council tax,she amost asks for this treatment.
It would be interesting to know the sort of people that are considered the right type to staff these authorites.

Well done Andy, you buffoon, (notice the spelling).

This woman is likely to have lived here all her life and in some way contributed to the establishment of our welfare state, now she is not due this necessary treatment.

Have you any statistics concerning how much treatment immigrants receive from the NHS in terms of AIDS, TB, Hepatitis, to name but a few?

As you will be aware those who arrive here if infected with the above cannot be sent back regardless of whether they are 'illegal' due to our Government's interpretation of the UNCHR.

For you to suggest that our contempary immigration problem is nothing new stinks of Marxist relativism.

Further, as for these previous waves of 'immigration' are you including the Danes, Romans, Normans, et al? As you will be aware these invasions tended to be at the expense of those resident at that time. It would appear that this particular dynamic has not changed!

interesting - what should be a serious debate reverts to an attack on immigrants and me.
yes Boudicca thanks i did notice the spelling.
if you look closely the trust are following guidelines set by nice. this should be the debate not about immigration. as for patriot i am english born and bred as well so why should i leave?

Boudicca, Watling Street says...
1:37pm Sun 25 Nov 07

Andy, my post was not an attack on immigrants, my how you love to grandstand.

Let's put it simply, why should this woman or anyone else who has paid into the pot/lived here all their lives be rejected a treatment when we know immigrants will receive (for example) treatment for AIDS no problem at all.

If there was a choice put to the people of this country on who should receive treatment what do you think the response would be?

Ironically I think attacks on immigrants will happen directly because of matters like this; accordingly it is a doubly disgusting decision and our political masters and their acolytes should hang their heads in shame.

By the way you deserve to be 'attacked' because you peddle the Marxist ideology which would subvert the genuine rights of the peoples who have lived in these Islands for generations; indeed those generations that fought and died to protect our way of life whether from Phillip of Spain, Napoleon, The Kaiser, Hitler etc.

You are no patriot!

andy, brighton says...

My Boudicca,
tell me where i said that YOU had attacked immigrants. You seem to love grandstanding as you put it.
i simply stated that if you read the article the trust are simply following guidelines laid down by NICE.
so itake it that you are a true patriot then ..
you only buy british goods made by british firms and with only british staff employed.
what computer are you using to get onto the internet with - is it british full of british components if not. naughty you. do you work for a british firm?
i take it you also refuse to see anyone who is not british in anyway shape or form.
what car do you drive?
do you only shop at a british supermarket?
if the answer is no then i am afraid you are not a patriot either.
oh another thing we have no been an island since the channel tunnel was completed or did you not notice that?

Mrs Bristow Jones can console herself with the thought that the savings made from denying her treatment will go towards virginity repair operations for muslim women so they can dupe their husbands,a true story that has been recently revealed.Poor old ali thinks his got a nice new motor and doesn't realise it's been twice round the clock.

Boudicca, Watling Street says...
9:55pm Sun 25 Nov 07

Andy you clearly suggested in your first posting that this thread had turned into an attack on immigrants and not a sensible debate; so to revert to the news item.

I think many of the people posting are unhappy with the PCT guidelines, and that is because the guidelines are wrong. They are wrong because they are not reasonable nor fair.

They are not fair because we can contrast the treatment this lady is receiving with that of an illegal immigrant who has recently arrived in this country with (lets say) AIDS. The immigrant will receive NHS treatment this lady is not going to receive NHS treatment.

This lady is likely to have made some contribution towards the state system, the immigrant (in this context) will not have made any contribution.

It is not the immigrants’ fault that they will receive the treatment that they need; nor is it the immigrant’s fault that this lady will not receive the treatment she so clearly deserves.

So, do you think that the PCT guidelines are reasonable and fair?

A Yes or No would be nice, let’s not digress again.

I am not sure what your point is with the rest of the posting, looks like more Marxist ramblings to me? One thing that is for sure you are no Geography graduate.

Well aren't you lucky you smug cow-how nice to seek pleasure from others misery. Avastin has not been clinical proven according to NICE, so I hope for your sake in 5 years time it doesn't turn out that it causes long term problems-in that instance don't come back here and expect the NHS to sort out the problem.....Encoulez vous!

the crucial point seems to be that a woman has a condition requiring treatment but the primary care trust says she can't have it.
she's likely to go blind before too long - possibly by christmas.
this is the same primary care trust that's happy to spend a small fortune on spin doctors.
oh and the same one that wants to close casualty and maternity units.
i'm beginning to think the primary care trust may be more of a problem than an answer.
perhaps if we scrapped the primary care trusts, the nhs would be in a better position to treat people like this woman.
and nice would be able to approve the cost effectiveness of more drugs in the way the french have managed to do (see post above).
west sussex primary care trust makes me ashamed to live here.
