Rookie leg-spinner Will Beer was the unlikely hero as Sussex ended their pre-season tour with a morale-boosting nine-run win over Yorkshire.

Beer, who was making his first appearance in the Pro-ARCH tournament in Abu Dhabi, took 3-34 as Sussex successfully defended a total of 200.

Another slow pitch once again hindered the stroke-makers on both sides but Yorkshire were cruising at 169-4 when their reply fell apart.

Off-spinner Ollie Rayner took 2-15 and Mike Yardy 1-42 as Sussex's spinners applied the squeeze after Craig White, who hit seven boundaries in his 40, looked to have set up a victory which would have won the competition, which has been contested by five counties.

Robin Martin-Jenkins, who took the new ball with Rageb Aga, was the pick of the seamers with 2-27 from his ten overs.

No Sussex batsmen passed 50 in four matches in the desert but Michael Thornely went the closest.

The 21-year-old opened the batting after Sussex won the toss and scored 49 off 101 balls to hold the innings together.

Thornely added 76 with Yardy (39) but Sussex subsided after reaching 110-1 and needed Martin-Jenkins' run-a-ball 34 to give them anything like a competitive total.

Skipper Chris Adams hit four fours in 23 off 21 balls while former England one-day international Tim Bresnan was the pick of Yorkshire's attack with 2-21 from his ten overs.

Sri Lanka claimed nine West Indies wickets on the final day to seal victory in the first Test at Providence Stadium.

Set an unlikely victory target of 437, the Windies were dismissed for 315 in their second innings, Chaminda Vaas finishing with figures of five for 61.

Opener Dwayne Bravo's 83 had given the hosts hope of pulling off a dramatic run chase as they reached lunch on 170 for two, but an impressive afternoon session helped the tourists to a 121-run triumph.
