Lapdancing gets the Go Go ahead in Worthing

Residents have spoken of their dismay after Worthing's first lapdancing club was given the go-ahead.

Councillors today agreed to grant the controversial Chatsworth Road Le Chic club a year's trial run following a stormy meeting which led to protesters being ejected from the public gallery.

The demonstration was led by 89-year-old war hero Steve Stevens who rose to his feet and started shouting 20 minutes into the licensing meeting at Worthing Town Hall.

He was immediately told to sit down by committee chairman John Lovell, who then adjourned the meeting as security guards, who had earlier searched people's bags as they entered, escorted around 25 campaigners out of the debating chamber.

The meeting was minutes later reconvened in the nearby Gordon Room, with the Press, but not the public, present.

Mr Stevens, a Second World War Beaufighter pilot decorated for bravery, who wore his medals to the meeting, remained defiant.

His outburst was backed by fellow campaigner Raymond New, 68, of Howard Street, Worthing, who said: "We are here to make a public stand. Lapdancing is just the tip of the iceberg. If this is introduced all sorts of other things could be introduced."

But Mark Weeden, pastor of Worthing Tabernacle church, Chapel Road, who was speaking against the club, apologised for the behaviour of Mr Stevens, who collected a 600-name protest petition.

Mr Weeden had earlier told councillors: "Alcohol plus erotic dancing will fuel the passions and appetites of males who are in these premises. The consequences of this are bawdiness, loudness and lewdness."

He feared the potential for vandalism, sex-related crime and domestic violence would increase.

Mr Weeden was also concerned that sex workers could be trafficked from eastern Europe to become dancers against their wills.

Barry Wells, co-owner of the club, insisted there would be stringent checks on dancers, supplied by agencies, to make sure they were not illegal immigrants forced into performing.

He had been very surprised at the positive reaction from the public after plans for the lapdancing club were unveiled.

Mr Wells said both men and women would be welcomed to the club, which would cater for up to 120 people at any one time between 9pm and 3.30am.

There would be up to eight dancers performing at any one time, but full nudity, touching, and private dancing would be banned.

Mr Wells agreed to raise the age limit for both dancers and customers from 18 to 21 before being given a year's licence starting on July 1.

Protesters now have 21 days to appeal to the magistrates' court, and can ask for a review of the licence at any time if they felt rules were being breached.

After the meeting, Mr Weeden said: "I am disappointed. It goes against the council's philosophy for the town, advocting sun, sea and shopping.

"They are trying to promote Worthing as a pleasant family-orientated town and this goes against that stance."

He feared there might now be further applications but vowed to continue protesting.

Mr Stevens said: "It is exactly what I expected. I am convinced it will increase sexual molestation."

But he would not be checking up on the club, stating: "I would get accused by the critical public of wanting to see the strippers. I am in a cleft stick."

I used to be a lap dancer and there is no shame in it, it does not always lead to further things and the people in Worthing deserve to have this club.

Fantastic news for the town. Creates employment, increases the economy with people spending money. Honourary life membership (whats left of it anyway) for Mr Stevens for championing the cause and bringing to everyones attention so that it got more support than against. Go enjoy yourself matey - they are only boobies you know.

Where are the dismayed residents mentioned in the article? Just the usual suspects Steve Stevens and a pastor.

Oh for goodness sake .mrs worthing's going down hill! don't be so dramatic, your three young children will hardly be going there will they! Worthing needs a bit of livening up. it's not like it's prostitution - just a few girls getting thier kits off and swinging round a pole. it's only a bit of fun, you silly old fuddy duddy!!!!

Thank goodness commonsense has prevailed and the licensing committee weren't swayed by a few religious types. Don't they realise that times have moved on and people don't want to be preached at?
Anyway, with all the fuss about it, I reckon I'll check it out!

Easy! You make it sound like Worthing Council are funding this club.

Do you think that a private company is going to fund a new swimming pool or something? Do you have any idea about commerical enterprise at all?

I believe that Mr Stevens is quite right to oppose this Lap Dancing application, because it degrades women and portrays them as nothing more than lumps of flesh for men to leer at, it also gives out the impression to sexually unstable and sexually immature men that women are always available for their sexual gratification and its this fact that has been connected to sexual attacks and rape on innocent decent women in the past
I give NOTICE that if this application is approved, let those who approve it be held responsible if just ONE woman or child is sexually assaulted as result, I rest my case.
Now I await the first sex attack/rape on a Worthing woman or child as a result of this Brothel in Worthing, because Brothel it is.

I'm sorry T.Ruth but I'm not sure you can pin down any sex attacks/rapes in the worthing area on the opening of a lap dancing club. I understand what you are saying but to be fair sex attacks have happened in worthing before the club existed and may well happen after it has opened as well. I'm not sure you can link the two as easily as you suggest.

Still can't accept the views of the majority, eh?
By no stretch of the imagination (even yours) can a lap dancing club be called a brothel as they are two entirely different things.
As to attacks on anyone, just how exactly are you going to prove the two are related?
Oh yes, you don't need evidence do you?
You just make things up as you go along and when in doubt, throw in some bible nonsense in the hope that it all goes away.
How sad I am for you.

The application HAS been approved, so why are you writing 'if'?

If God did not want people to have sex, He would have devised some other way of creating children - pollination by bees, perhaps.

Though when you look at so many men, that doesn't seem so bad an idea at all.

When I look at some of the oafish, ugly, ill-spoken blokes lumbering along Western Road, I wonder what woman ever gives them a spot of legover.

Perhaps that's why they fetch up in lapdancing places.

The Bible has many stern warnings about being arrogant in our attitude towards God – be warned.
As it says in Proverbs 1 verses 29 to 32:-
29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
30 since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
I believe the decision of the Worthing Council to allow Lap Dancing was wrong. The effects on society of the council’s decision may not be quantifiable (fortunately for them)or attributable directly to what goes on in Le Chic club but ‘cause-and-effect’ dictates that allowing this sort of activity will bear (rotten) fruit in the days to come.

If you want to believe in souped-up version of ET then that's up to you but can you please keep it to yourself.

As for quoting from the bible (a worse piece of fiction than even Jeffrey Archer couldn't beat) it says many things and most of them contradictory. You're talking about fearing God but the bible tells us that he (or she) is a God of love. What's to fear in a God of Love?

Doesn't Leviticus tell us to kill homosexuals (as well as telling us not to cut our beards) but the ten commandments tell us not to kill and remind me, who was it whose daughters got him drunk so they could have sex with him?

From a lap-dancing report Glasgow 2004, concluded:
Contrary to the opinion of club owners interviewed for the porpose of this study, lap-dancing clubs can be seen as part of the sex industry. Lap dancing is becoming increasingly normalised. Activities within the clubs can be seen as detrimental for gender inequalities. The buying and selling of sexual services does occur in some lap-dance clubs. Current licensing conditions appear inadequate. Working conditions and terms of employment of lap-dancers are inadequate and problematic. There is strong evidence that lap-dancers can suffer humiliation and sexual harassment on a regular basis from customers and staff/management. There is strong public lobby opposing lap dance clubs in the UK and elsewhere. Many dancers begin working in lap dance clubs through lack of real choice. The requirement for dancers to 'glamour model' to advertise the club, and the evidence that some customers take covert photographs of the dancers whilst naked, suggest links between lap dancing clubs and pornography.

It is a scam – is there no protection from libel for me?
I would never wish anyone to “burn in Hell”.
My life has been devoted to populate Heaven not Hell. In Heaven there is no sorrow nor tears and no more death. In Worthing I’ve given out hundreds of my leaflet telling how my life was changed when I became a Christian.
One of my favourite bible verses is in the Gospel of John Chapter 3 verse 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever (you, me or anyone else) believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

I am beginning to wonder if Steve Stevens is a homosexual as he is so obsessed about some women taking their clothes off, as for randy men accosting women when they come out of this proposed strip club has he not noticed the lack of clothes that some of the women that go clubbing wear, some of the skirts & tops are so small they are only one step away from being naked anyway.
