More funding plea for Sussex piers

Campaigners are calling for urgent funding to save Sussex's crumbling piers.

The renewed pleas came after Bognor Pier yesterday became the latest pier casualty, when a section of it was demolished on safety grounds.

It follows Brighton's West Pier, which was destroyed by a fire in 2003 and Hastings Pier, which is currently partly closed to the public over fears parts of it could collapse.

Angie Edlin, Bognor Pier manager, said three columns at the end of the pier was so badly corroded by the sea they had to be removed.

Mrs Edlin added that it is expensive to maintain the upkeep of a pier as it is a constant battle against the sea.

She said the nightclub on the pier, Club Vision, would not be affected. She also said she did not think the annual Bognor Birdman event would be affected.

Do you think Sussex piers should be given Government or lottery money? Tell us what you think below.

What's the point - they'll be burned down by the competition

The day of the pier is long gone. I can get a fortnight in the Med. for a fraction of the cost of a week at the UK seaside. They are just money gobblers. Blow them all up on Nov.5th They won't be missed.

I became deeply disillusioned at meetings of the West Pier Trust. A hopeless bunch.

Piers belong to another age, when there were paddle steamers & other craft that used them. Trippers, also used to think they were on a liner, when they walked along them, as there were life belts, lifeboats, & all had captains. Now not required, now there are Marinas & other mooring places.

I think you shoudl go back to journalism school...

"three columns at the end of the pier was so badly corroded by the sea..." ?? You mean were?

"partly closed to the public over fears parts of it could collapse.." Do you mean partially closed?

Leave the west pier as it is and put the homeless in it. Nothing to destroy there, so its a perfect place. And plenty of water to wash in.

Let 'em all fall into the sea and give the gypsies a good wash. And FFS we don't care whether it's you or an imposter posting, all your posts, real or not, are inane drivel

The neglect we've shown to piers in the past is indicative of the current age of disposability.
Walking out over the water is no less pleasant an activity than it was in the Victorian era.
We should preserve and modernise these attractions. Long live piers!

It is surely a great puzzle that the monstrous pile of rusting scrap iron which was once the West Pier has been in situ for over five Years ! Usually
enthusiastic adherents of the Health & Safety Brigade
have been strangely silent on this appalling hazard
