Pledge to improve car park security
Security is being reviewed at a
run-down car park which has
been plagued by drug taking and
all-night raves.
Neighbours of the London Road
multi-storey car park, named as one of
the worst in Brighton last year, are
calling for a crackdown on antisocial
behaviour, including joy riding.
Ian Davey, Green councillor for St
Peters and North Laine, said he had
received a series of complaints from
people living in Mayflower Square,
a council-owned block above the car
park.
A petition has been signed by 36
residents demanding action.
Geoffrey Theobald, chairman of
Brighton and Hove's Environment
Committee, said security would be
reviewed at the car park. He added
£500,000 was to be spent improving the
structure and security later this year.
One resident, who is registered
blind, told Coun Davey: "I can't
emphasise how scary it is being
woken by a noise, feeling vulnerable
and scared, wondering if it's someone
outside my window and then realising
it's below me - not something you
expect living on the ground floor."
Coun Davey added: "When residents
have complained they have
been told there is no money available
to secure the car park at night. Unfortunately
the situation has not
improved. Occasional visits from a
security company are not the answer.
"Residents are asking that the situation
is reviewed and that the car
park is secured at night by shutters."
The barriers are lifted at 7pm to
allow people to leave the car park as it
no longer manned.
Coun Theobald said security would
be reviewed and new CCTV installed
as part of the £500,000 refurbishment.
He said: "We are drawing up the
specifications for these works and
security is a primary objective."
The council is ploughing at least
£1 million other car parks.
The money comes from savings
from cutting NCP, which currently
run five sites in the city.

will this mean they will recoup the £500000 spent by increasing the parking charges

Last time I parked there I saw paramedics attempting to resuscitate a junkie. The car park was covered in needles, and still is.
There is also a gange of junkies who shelter there during the day, and impressionable young kids are down there with them. Even the dealers feel free to pop down there and dispense their wares in broad daylight and they are so obvious to spot; Man, on his own leaning against the tower block next door, waiting for people to approach. come on coppers you know its happening and because you have it nailed down as a social problem area you make no effort to sort it out. Get rid of the junkies, move them on, take away their shelter, and get the kids back into school where they should be.
